Best rug for living area

Hi all!

Recently moved into a cool new place that I’m in the process of decorating. Very early stages - trying to work with what I already have before I start buying new things.

Also I’ll be adding quite a bit more lamp lighting as my place is quite dark - but will get to that soon.

I have two rugs and wanted opinions on what looks best. I’ve tried them both alone and also layered. I like the colours in the Persian but I feel like the jute rug really lightens things up alone and is a better size.

Apologies for the different angles, lighting and mess, took these at different times without considering sharing.

Open to “get a different rug” if that’s the best option but ideally would love to use what I have. Will also accept any other suggestions for decor and layout etc if anyone has any burning ideas. got lots of ideas myself but not rushing it!

Thanks in advance 🙂

Drafty open fireplace and smoke odour

Wanting a sense check on if this is the landlords responsibility or mine. I’ve moved into an old drafty stone cottage with no heating or cooling except for an open fireplace. The open fireplace has no flue and is quite large and I can see the sky when I pop my head in. The draft coming from it is significant. On breezy days I can feel the cold air on my face sitting a few meters away on the couch.

Winter isn’t going to be pleasant with no way to close it up and I am not intending to use it as in my previous experience having one in a former home, they’re inefficient, expensive (wood), require a lot of cleaning and maintenance and it’s not something I want to deal with. I took over the lease here and when I arrived the fireplace had a bunch of soot and ash in it. I’ve since cleaned and scrubbed as much of the brick out as I possibly can but there’s also a very strong musty smoky smell that makes the entire home smell like an ash tray. Cleaning didn’t help and there seems to be significant build up of many years of soot and grime that extends the whole way up the chimney.

I’ve had trouble finding something large enough to block it up with internally, or even externally and I don’t really want to have to pay to have it professionally cleaned. Is this on the landlord or is this on me?
