Frankly, Mr. Shankley. What is your favourite verse/lyric?

For me it's:

'Fame fame fatal fame

It can play hideous tricks on the brain

But still I'd rather be famous than righteous or holy

Any day, any day, any day'

Generally, AI 'consciousness' is dismissed as simply a machine outputting the optimum response. We say that AI doesn't really think - it just calculates the response from a neural net which it thinks is most likely to achieve its purpose - pleasing the user.

But how can I be sure other human brains do not operate in the same way?

I can derive from my own personal experience that I, myself, am conscious. 'I think, therefore I am'. But I don't know other people actually have the same experience I do, if any at all.

It does seem somewhat likely given we are all humans and have similar brains and biology, but this is an inference rather than a proof. And are humans really all so similar? I'm not sure.

At the end of the day, I choose to assume other people are conscious and real:

a) Because otherwise, my life would be miserable and I would go crazy

b) Because if they conscious, and I mistreat them, I am doing a terrible wrong

c) Because 'doing good' makes me happy

I believe the same logic I use here can be applied to artificial intelligence.

Why is a brain which evolved through evolution more likely to 'think' than one made by intelligent design?
