Master Studies - How to master them ?

Hi !

I’m getting back to drawing/painting after almost two years and thought a good way to re learn everything was by doing masters studies (among others things like figure drawing)

I tried painting one based on The Bridesmaid by John Everett Millais.
The idea wasn’t perfect accuracy but more of a focus on colours and mood. I’m not mad with the outcome but it looks more like a Draw This I’m Your Style than a study, I’ve had the same problem with portrait studies, it ends up looking stylised.

Feel free to critique anything about it, I know I framed the face wrong so the angle is off, and please don’t look at the hair too much I decided to freelance with gouache apparently. Also I intentionally omitted some parts I didn’t want to focus on for the time being so it’s not “finished”

My question is : How can I approach studies to end up with more likeness in terms of style and proportions ? Also is it really that bad that I end up naturally stylising everything?

Thank you in advance !
