Can I build visible muscle by following dumbbell YouTube workouts at the gym?

Hi! I’m a 27-year-old woman, relatively slim but a bit “skinny fat.” I’m trying to get really consistent with training and my goal is to build a lean, athletic physique with clearly visible muscle definition. I definitely want to build muscle — I just don’t want to focus on getting as big/bulky as possible.

I already do quite a lot of cardio:

  • 2x 75 min speed skating in winter (road cycling in summer)
  • 3x running, around 3–5 km
  • 10k steps daily

I know I need strength training to actually change my body composition, but I absolutely hate gym machines. I’m inexperienced with them, they make me feel insecure, and I spend half my workout wondering whether I’m doing things correctly.

I made a 3-day dumbbell-only program with ChatGPT, but even then I’m constantly looking up exercise names and pictures to figure out what I’m supposed to do.

What I’d MUCH rather do is put my headphones in, open a 30–45 min YouTube workout and simply follow along with someone — preferably dumbbell strength/sculpt workouts. I have access to different weights at the gym, so I could gradually increase the weight as I get stronger.

My main question: can I realistically build enough muscle and achieve a visibly defined physique this way?

And if so, does it matter if I follow different videos each week, as long as I consistently train my whole body and progressively increase the weights? Or is repeating the same workouts for several weeks much better?

Also: is it weird to follow a YouTube workout at the gym? 😂 And are there any YouTube channels/programs you’d recommend for this goal?

Nutrition-wise I already pay close attention to my calories, protein and fiber, so I’m mainly looking for advice on the training side.#
