Okay so the gx2 was NOT the move. But I went out in search of a 7'6" penn (didn't have it) but I was able to find another recommended rod: the ug bigwater. I got a BG5000 with 65lb braid on an 12' UglyStik Bigwater Heavy/Fast action (20-40lb/2-6oz).
I talked with an awesome fella who said he's actually fished for tarpon with this exact setup. He explained that while I could opt for a much heavier rod, this rod very balanced for my reel (and the colors match nicely).
I guess my only inquiries now would be for some good spots, good baits/lures, and some good fighting advice. I'll be in Destin, Florida next week as far as time/location goes.
I'm mostly a catfisherman, but I've caught just about every major freshwater fish in south Texas (except an alligator gar) so while I'm pretty good at fighting fish, I'm really a newbie when I comes to saltwater. I said in my previous posts that this has been a dream fish of mine since I was like 10 when I saw it on river monsters, so I'm definitely a bit delusional, but this is my arc for next week.
Any advice/anecdotes are appreciated!
Okay so I kinda got flamed on my last post, but I also heard a lot of advice and encouragement. First off, I got a GX2 9' medium from walmart, and secondly I filled out the spool with 65lb PowerPro braid.
So, while I understand I'm going into a battle I'm not likely to win, I am determined to make this happen and I'm still open to any advice. I also would be open to returning the rod in favor of something heavier if it's not possible to fight a tarpon on here. I would also appreciate some location recommendations for maybe a good dock, beach, or canal in the Destin area.
I got a BG5000 on a 6'6" Ugly Stik intercoastal (yes, it's a cast rod, but i got it for a steal on marketplace). I'm planning on maxing out the real with 300yds of 65lb braid. Im going to Florida next week and it's kind of my dream to catch a tarpon. Can I do it with this setup?
