I recently went to Labor and Delivery due to a scare, and the conversation I had with the head nurse was very enlightening. When I told her my Mom doesn’t seem to be excited by or interested in her granddaughter, she told me she hears that a lot from pregnant Moms with boomer parents. I always thought my Mom would be excited for me or at the very least be part of my support system. Instead she makes everything about herself. She hasn’t offered to help in any way to prepare for the baby. She threw a fit on Mother’s Day (didn’t call her in the AM or coordinate on dinner), and she didn’t even think to wish me a Happy Mother’s Day. Recently she’s been sending me aggressive texts about these relatively minor things I didn’t do for her or contact her about. I’m worn out, and what little energy I have is for preparing for my daughter coming (3rd trimester) and work (pays the bills). The head nurse’s comments really made me feel less isolated and alone. I just wanted to share in case there’s anyone else out there feeling like their support system isn’t there for you. You aren’t alone!
