S&H for creating melody?

I was experimenting with using one looping envelope as the sampling clock for another. Every End-of-Cycle trigger captures the current value of the modulation envelope. Quantizing those sampled values turns a continuous modulation into a melodic sequence.

Small changes to the relationship between the two envelope periods completely change the resulting phrases, even though the patch itself remains very simple.

Then I added another layer by letting the modulation influence the amplitude envelope pattern itself. Since that pattern determines when sampling happens, the melody starts affecting the mechanism that generates it, creating a feedback loop between rhythm and pitch.

I like building systems like this, where musical structure emerges from interactions rather than explicit note programming.

Two sequencers, no LFOs, no envelopes — all movement comes from FM ratios

I was experimenting with two polyrhythmic sequencers (16 and 12 steps) that generate their own harmonic note streams.

Then I started increasing FM from one sequence into the other.

Because both melodies keep changing independently, every note pair creates a different FM ratio, so the timbre is constantly evolving without repeating.

What’s interesting is that there are no LFOs or envelope-driven parameter modulations in this patch. Nearly all of the movement comes from FM alone.

The resonant filter and comb filter are also part of the synthesis structure rather than post-processing effects, continuously reshaping the spectrum that feeds back into the FM interaction.

It feels less like animating parameters and more like letting relationships between pitches generate the complexity.

Hey everyone! I need some feedback from the Octatrack user community. I'm a huge Octa fan myself, but I can't calmly overlook the MIDI limitations of the instrument.

I've come up with an idea to create firmware for the Kaleidoscope that would expand the Octatrack's MIDI capabilities. A MIDI filter with a user-friendly interface for configuration, which receives messages from a keyboard and sends already modified ones to the Octa.

  1. Playing samples across the full MIDI range through a combination of pitch and rate. Instead of a single note message, the device sends out note on + rate MIDI CC.
  2. Assignable MIDI modulators. MW, PB, AT, and keytrack, which are completely absent in the Octa.
  3. MIDI routing for easily creating unisons and polyphony on the Octa. I've previously tried to do something similar with the SOMA Metaconformer, but I think the Octa needs a specifically tailored solution.

This firmware will be free for everyone, but obviously requires you to have a Kaleidoscope. This message is not an advertisement. I'm just curious to hear your opinion. Maybe the problem has already been solved. Or maybe it would only be of interest to 20–30 people, which is too few to spend time developing FW, a demo and a manual.

In any case, thanks for your attention!
