I built a tracker that runs on Linux-based retro games handhelds...

Sorry for the poor quality video but I was hyped to get this out there. I've marked it as brand affiliated so I hope that this post is ok!

Long-time tracker producer here (Renoise user, also cut my teeth on OctaMED on the Amiga). I've spent the last few months building a proper tracker-style music production tool for Linux-based retro handhelds, and it's at the point where I would love to get it out to some people!

With this app, your handheld can also be a genuine pocket music studio. Five synth engines and a sampler, full track composition, insert and send FX. This all runs natively on the handheld, no extra hardware required.

More info here: https://elktracker.io

Since this community would genuinely be helping me stress-test it across different devices before the public launch, I want to say thanks properly: use code EARLY50 for 50% off ($14.50) at https://buy.elktracker.io - the code is limited to the first 25 buyers.

Tested on the RG351V and a few other handhelds. Would love to know what breaks, what's missing, and whether it holds up on your hardware!

Is black now the only colour being produced for Octatrack?

As per title. I really like the grey coloured Octatrack units but it seems they’ve been out of production since early 2000s. Is this correct? Can you now have any colour you like as long as it’s black? :)

Advice for hardware to record and play voice

Hello,

I have a Korg Electribe 2 that I love.

I would like now to add a new hardware to record my own voice (singing a chorus, a verse...), add some fx (reverb, delay, why not a bit of autotune) and play it through the "audio in" of the Electribe. I am now doing it with my smartphone (Koala Sampler) but would like something better.

I dont know what kind of hardware can do this ?

I have found maybe the Boss RC 202 or 505 but i am not sure. Ideally I would like something able to record my own voice and also other samples (from better singers than me!)

Do you have any ideas ? I am still a beginner in this hardware world. Important note : I dont want to use a computer.

MC-505 Live Set — Recorded Live

Recorded a live set using the Roland MC-505.
No DAW, just the MC-505 and live performance.
Hope you enjoy it!

https://youtu.be/MgJgEvcRdnM?si=4ex26ujy5rfED6vC

The JV-series sounds are clear and detailed, but not overly delicate, which made them really easy to use.

Classic Trance on OP-XY

This one was quite a challenge to figure out how to get that classic plucky trance sound, but I am really pleased with the final result. All sounds are from the factory synths and samples. The Trance pluck and strings are connected to the gyroscoop to create some filter movement and tonal changes. Recorded into Logic Pro with a little loudness bump on the master. Enjoy… and hopefully a nice trip down to memory lane :)

TURN STATIC BASS HITS INTO MOVING ACID BASSLINE

In this video I use a set of 303 bass sounds (sampled from my 303) all on the same pitch but with different settings, then process each one with FX focused on stereo width and tone, and sequence them on the SP-404MKII to get an acid-style line that’s way more varied and interesting, even over short loops.

It’s a simple but amazing trick to bring your grooves

to life.

Enjoy!

Best portable groovebox for live performance

Hi Groovebox community!
I'm building a live setup and looking for a compact and lightweight groovebox with at least 64-step patterns. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

My latest Bento jam - chill Unknown.

I hope you like this. I've tried to show the elements from each channel so you can see how this was put together. The LiveTrak is an excellent companion for the Bento. I'm going to add a Volca Keys to the rig and then I think I'll have an excellent dawless set up that fits in my backpack. People have questioned the Bento use case - this is mine. I've no space for a studio in my house so I wanted to create a music production kit that is portable and packable. The Bento is working better for me than a Circuit, MPC or PE Tracker did as the core or "brain".

Retro MC-303 '90s promo items

I worked in a music tech store when the MC-303 launched, and I still have the old cloth promo banner. Does anyone else have any retro promo items from this launch?

EsX or EmX

Hey, I’ve got a dilemma: I already own a Korg E2 (both the synth and sampler versions). I’m thinking about buying an older Korg model, but if I can only get one, I’m thinkin between the ESX and the EMX. Would the ESX make sense? I play tekno music in the 160–190 BPM range. Thanks a lot for the advice and tips.!!

OP devices' phenomenon

I've been looking at some videos about OP-XY (one introducing all the features) and frankly I don't understand its phenomenon. I mean, it costs around $2500-ish (in Poland, that is) and for that you get a 3S device, but at the same time you can spend like $930-ish for a MPC One Gen2, which, seems to me like a far more capable device than the former. Larger and without battery - I acknowledge that - but I'm unsure if I'm ready to pay $1400 just to have these features (and lose such ones as ~unlimited bars and number of instruments limited only by RAM and CPU.

So my question is: what actually is behind the TE phenomenon? People used to the brand? Some special features I'm unaware of? Hype of the community? Help me understand.

In this video, you’ll see a practical overview of how it works: how to connect it to the SP, which controls you can assign, and some creative ideas for using it in your live sets or dawless jams .

This is not a step-by-step tutorial, but a quick demo to help you understand if it can be useful in your setup

Thanks to u/Puzzleheaded_Big_103 and u/Cyneox for their work!

Groovie: an advanced web-based drum machine / beat sequencer that's fully free and can output a MIDI clock signal

Hi there! Just wanted to share an open source music project I've been working on. There are already a number of web-based drum machines, but I think most of them are pretty basic (small fixed drum kit, single pattern, etc), so I built something more advanced.

I'm calling it Groovie, and notably, it has a timeline view so you can arrange up to 32 patterns into a song. It has 150+ samples you can select from. You can adjust the panning and volume of each row individually. It has delay as well as an LPF/HPF filter and swing. It has the ability to send a MIDI clock signal so you can sync it with your hardware (Chrome only), and lastly, it works on mobile phones and tablets too. I designed the interface to be intuitive and to use fairly standard design language (I hate cryptic UIs).

The app is fully static with no backend, but you can share beats/tracks with others as they can be encoded into the hash part of a link, in a compressed format. Some examples:

The app is live here: https://maximecb.github.io/groovie

The GitHub repo: https://github.com/maximecb/groovie

Since it's open source and fully static, it's free forever. You don't need any kind of account to use it. You can't upload new samples in the app, but I am very much open to accepting contributions (pull requests) for new samples, but they have to be public domain / CC0 / out of copyright.

Let me know what you think. If anybody wants to share some patterns they create, I would love to add them as new examples in the readme.
