Looking for feedback & suggestions on my current data backup & archival approach

So my current setup is very simple. For short-term data backups, I have the following:

- Three 2TB portable drives (1 SSD, 2 HDD) solely dedicated to macOS Time Machine backups in case my machine ever fails (it has suddenly failed once before, having these backups saved me).

- Three 2TB portable drives (1 SSD, 2 HDD) which holds a lot of old data that I want to keep long term or “forever”(photos, videos, music, files, TV shows). I keep all three drives in sync using rsync and Carbon Copy Cloner on macOS.

For long-term data backups with cold storage, I am currently in the process of digitizing a bunch of old photos and videos, and storing them on a couple BD-R XL M-Disc’s. I’m also going to transfer some of my photos / videos from my aforementioned drives onto these backup discs.

Currently, I’m not following the 3-2-1 rule as well as I should. My plan is to make multiple burner BD-R M-Disc’s, and store one offsite somehow TBD. But as far as my HDDs & SSDs with data, none of them are stored offsite or in the cloud or anything.

Eventually, I’d love to build a NAS with a Home server running Jellyfin and stuff, and mess around with RAID and such. But currently that seems unattainable due to hardware and storage prices. A lot of what I’m doing now is based on what I already have access to or got second hand. My biggest expenses so far have been a Blu-Ray optical drive and the BD-R XL M-Discs.

Given all that, does anyone have any feedback based on what I’m currently doing? Does anything jump out to you that may be worth looking into?

If you have suggestions on how to expand this to slowly move toward my desired end state, please let me know. Thanks!

Bought an Asus drive expecting a BU40N inside, but instead it says Pioneer? Is this legit or a knockoff?

I bought an Asus SBW-06D2X-U drive for cheapish to serve as a backup to my LG BU40N. Didn’t expect this result in MakeMKV though. I’m not 100% sure if this is a legit Asus drive since I was under the impression that these newer Asus drives contain LG internals, not Pioneer.

If it helps, the manufacturing date says Jan 2018.

Questions about inFamous 1 ending and sequel games

So I just played through inFamous 1 for the first time, and I loved it for the most part, but have some questions before I jump into inFamous 2. Wondering if anyone in this community who’s more knowledgeable can answer any of them? See below:

- I wish we knew a bit more about who exactly Kessler is and his prior timeline, and more about Cole’s backstory and relationship with Trish and Zeke, feels like I was just starting to get to know him when the campaign finishes. Do we get to know more this stuff in infamous 2?

- Is there any benefit to playing through all the remaining side missions (besides trophies and XP and stuff)? Are there any hidden cutscenes or additional lore left in inFamous 1?

- Do we learn more about who “Moya” is in future games?

- I’ve heard that InFamous 1 / 2 & Festival of Blood are all part of the same universe, and then everything that comes after it is a reboot and technically not part of the same story as the original 3 games. Is that accurate?

Thanks!

What are some things to keep in mind when transitioning from a remote job to an in-person job?

I work as a developer and have been blessed enough to have a remote role for most of my career post graduation (after the pandemic began). However, I want to start searching for new opportunities with better pay, and one aspect of that is going to be widening my search for hybrid and in-person roles. And doing that comes with a whole host of new worries (masking at work, office politics and communication around masking, practical considerations, etc).

If you have any experience, suggestions or things to keep in mind with this type of transition, I’d would appreciate it. It can be practical suggestions, mental suggestions, etc. Aspects that I might not consider, coming from working remote for most of my career so far.

(I haven’t found anything yet, but have started sending out applications. Not sure how interviews will go if they are ever in person…)

Thanks!

Has anyone successfully emulated the first 3 Uncharted games on PC or Linux using RPCS3?

My PS3 died recently, so I’m considering just slowly transitioning to a gaming PC for all future casual gaming. Tired of consoles.

It looks like compatibility / support is mixed when using PS3 emulators for the first 3 games. Although some people have had success getting it to run properly.

Given this, I’m curious to know if anyone has gotten it to work? If so, how feasible was it, what specs are you using? If you are able to also specify the operating system you’ve used, that would be much appreciated.

I’m planning to purchase UC4 and Lost Legacy on GOG, so no need to emulate those games.

How much of a threat could Darth Tyranus be to the Jedi during the High Republic?

I’m reading about the High Republic era now and it fascinates me. I know the High Republic is a long period of time, so want to clarify that I’m talking about the entire time period in general, rather than any specific year range. Feel free to interpret that as you see fit. Apologies if I butcher any specific details.

First, how would you scale him in terms of overall fighting ability against the Jedi of his time? Does he get easily beaten by high tiers like High Republic Yoda, Porter Engle? Or can he hold his own, to the point of being considered a threat to them?

Secondly, let’s say he still has the same political aspirations as he did during the Clone Wars. Knowing what be does about the future of the galactic republic, how do you think he would fair in terms of infiltrating existing power structures and sowing discontent?

Lastly, how might he fair against the Bane Sith during this time? Would he be enough of a threat to warrant direct engagement, and if so can be win more often than not due to the nature of the rule of 2 producing stronger Sith over time? (Meaning the Sith of this time might not be as strong as Sidious eventually?)

Is my understanding of what “தவறும் கூடிச்சே” correct?

My understanding is that thavaram = failures and mistakes, and kodhiche = accumulating / growing in number.

So my understanding of this phrase is that “mistakes are accumulating”.

Is my understanding accurate?

The second word “கூடிச்சே” is whats’s confusing a bit me here. When spoken, it sounds kind of like the colloquial word for jumped that friends use (don’t know the Tamil spelling, English phonetic spelling is something like “gudhichen”.)

Other idea is the second word me “do it with me”? So, “make some mistakes with me”? Popular translate apps indicate this as well.

Idk if I’m completely wrong here.

Appreciate any help!

[PS3] My PS3’s red light keeps disappearing after plugging it into power supply. Any ideas what’s wrong with it?

I pulled my old PS3 slim out of storage and tried to plug it into power to play a game. When I plug in the power supply cord, the red light appears for a couple seconds before disappearing for good (until I unplug the power supply chord and try again). Not sure what’s going on or how to fix it.

Any suggestions on what I can try? Or if my PS3 is dead without possibility of repair?

If you need any other details to help diagnose please let me know. Thanks!

Website is repeatedly crashing for users while inserting lots of list elements in a loop, seeking advice.

I’m a junior maintaining a critical web app at work built with vanilla JS. One part of the page has a modal which users can open by clicking on a button. On click, it makes a fetch HTTP GET request to an API to pull some data from a backend DB, and then uses that data to create a bunch of list elements to put into an unordered list shown in the modal. Users can search the contents of the list as well. It’s definitely not best practice and I’ve thought about optimizing it, but because there hasn’t been a lot of data to be shown there it hasn’t been a priority.

However last week there was a LOT of data inserted into the backend DB, and now I’ve received an urgent ticket describing an issue where the web app is crashing when a user opens the modal. Apparently it happens most frequently when sharing their screen on Zoom calls, maybe due to a low RAM issue?

I’ve tried to optimize the code by using a DocumentFragment to batch the updates all at once, removing inline DOM style additions and instead using CSS classes to avoid repaints and reflows, and dabbled with scheduler.yield to try and allow tasks in the task queue to complete in between appending list items in the loop. None of these approaches have really made any dent, and it’s led me to think that the sheer amount of list items being inserted is the problem here.

I did come across a concept called “list virtualization” which sounds like it could work, but I hadn’t been able to find any article or guide to learn how to implement it using just vanilla JS. I can’t use a third party library either since that would require a longer discussion around the security and such which I don’t have time for.

Based on this context, would list virtualization work? If so, do you have or know of any good introductory guides or articles for learning the theory and how to implement it?

If not, are there any other solutions which I could try?

Thanks!
