Postcards from America

Someone has this box set? It is a collection of various objects. Magnum, 2012: Soth, Pellegrin, Meiselas, Goldberg, Subotzky, Strand.

I am considering to get one from the used market in my region because I like the format. I begann putting together my collection some time ago and have around 15 books now, I wonder if anyone here can say if this is more of a collector's piece or something that has value also for studying. I guess it is both, but I'd like to know other's opinions.

Edit: i am not that interested on collector's pieces. I get photo books for studying. This box set is quite expensive, thus the question

Flattest BW negative theory

I am coming back to analog BW after a couple of decades. Kinda have to relearn some stuff.

I keep stumbling on increasing contrast during developing. Isn't this something to avoid? The reason, if I remember correctely, is that you want to have the flattest negative possible, in order to have all the playroom possible in the darkroom. You can increase contrast in a print(and a scan) but not the other way around.

What am I missing? Maybe it's just matter of preferred style and either way is ok?

Bessa r3m shutter noise level

To the owners or tester of Bessa r3m, how does the shutter sound compare to the Leica m4/m6 and to the nikon FE?

I am looking into a rangefinder and I have found an r3m, a m6 and a m4p. I tested a m6 some years ago from a friend and was impressed with the shutter noise/vibrations, and that is pretty much the main reason why I'd get a Leica m4/m6. But they are bloody expensive and I rather invest my money on travels/workshops. I have found a bessa r3m, butI have no possibilities to test it before buying. I could return it in case, but I rather not waste the seller's time (private person).

I do not want a camera that get too noticed by its shutter sound, and sometimes I might take pictures in quiter places.

Z50II real life experience vs FF

Hei all.

I love my d800 and I recently got a ricoh gr3x. I need something to bridge the gap beteween the two. I really like nikon, so I am looking at a small FF or APSC. I think now it is a good time to jump into the z system, even if I will keep my d800 and my most uses f lenses as I really love it and generally prefere dslr over mirrorless (i was a long time fuji user).

My case use is documenting hiking, alpinism (so sport and landscape photography), a bit of general reportage.

I do lots of black and white conversions and my workflow is set on working with the d800 raw file, that is very good to work with. For my style of bw conversion tone separation is very important so a superior raw file is what I need as output from the camera+glass combo. Good jpegs are welcome but I need a strong raw file. I also print large-ish (A3+/A2 but sometimes larger).

I am not interested that much lab tests about sharpness or rendition and whatsoever. I am here to ask for real life hands on experienced opinion, and I am mostly curious about the Z50II as it looks to be the lightest option.

I am pivoting towards the z50II or z5II. Autofocus and processor are not that important to me, but getting the first iterations of these cameras is not much cheaper of the second iterations in my regional market, so I am gladly looking at the IIs.
