I’ve spent a fair bit of time on Kefalonia and it’s one of those places that doesn’t try too hard to impress you… but somehow stays with you more than the “flashier” islands.
A few things I wish I knew before my first trip:
- It’s not a party island If you’re expecting Mykonos-style nightlife, you won’t find it here. Kefalonia is slower, quieter… more about long lunches, sea swims, and evenings that stretch out without much of a plan.
- You’ll want a car You can get around without one, but the island really opens up when you have the freedom to explore. Some of the best beaches and little tavernas are tucked away.
- The beaches are all different Myrtos gets the attention (and it is stunning), but smaller places like Spartia, Petani, and Agia Efimia area beaches can feel more relaxed and personal.
- Food is a big part of it Nothing overly fancy — just really good, simple Greek food done properly. Fresh fish, grilled meats, local wine… the kind of meals that turn into 2–3 hour affairs without noticing.
- It’s ideal if you like space and calm What stood out to me most is how unhurried everything feels. You’re not rushing between sights — you’re just… there. Swimming, eating, sitting, repeating.
- Sunsets and mornings hit differently Early mornings especially — the sea is completely still, hardly anyone around, and it feels like you’ve got the place to yourself.
If you’re after somewhere a bit more low-key, where you can properly switch off and enjoy time with family or friends, Kefalonia does that really well.
Happy to answer any questions if you’re thinking of going — it’s one of those places people tend to return to.
