How tf do you make catchy melodies 😭

I’ve been at it for 3 months and ngl I’m really proud of my progress but when I listen to songs like knocking, get dripped , rockstar lifestyle, sky, run + ran etc (ik it’s not ug) how tf do they make the melodies so majestic and memorable? is it because it’s a different sound to the ear versus prior stuff?

everyone I try to focus on being intentional with melodies and making them exciting they end sounding corny or random so I resort to basic brass + strings n focus on drums lol but I wanna start making melodies I’m proud of, my beats are starting to get pretty repetitive.

What’s your arrangement/automation go-tos to keep your beats fun?

I was listening to basement freestyle prod. by Luger and always wondered how the beat was so energetic and fun, I kept obsessing over picking the right sounds, chords, melodies, etc and would make loops nonstop until I heard something i liked

then on a random walk (of course)…i realized it’s the arrangement and automations when I listened to the instrumental (shits crazy I recommend)

Then I stopped obsessing over making loops and focused more on arranging and learning how to make it fun and always moving.

High pass filter automations, gross beat stutters/retriggers and vinyl stops are my fav. I’ll occasionally use a full 1-2 silence break. I’ll try to change up the drums too and make small changes in the melodies to create more suspense n drops

Events/communities for music production?

Got into music production a few months ago and would love to start meeting people who are into it too, whether that’s open sets/mics, weekly live music events, etc. I used to hang out on OB & North park a lot when I first moved here and loved the vibes there

I love dbr so much

I think all of Travis’ work is top notch except jb2 but srs DBR hits different. I see it as utopia’s other half since the production on it is clean and modern vs dbr

dbr’s got that rager cheap/vintage made feel to it, def gotta give it to Mike dean/luger/metro for the production side. it sounds like it was made on a shitty studio setup but ironically makes it sound better

basement freestyle sounds like a song you’d hear at some sketchy warehouse underground show at 4am where the speakers are rattling and about to fall apart from the baseline/distortion and it’s a 100 people tops packed raging to it

is this in key?

idc if it sounds good or not (it does to me, but more so wanna make sure I have music theory fundamental's down before i play with fx and sound selection) but is it atleast in key?

every beat I post someone comments "any key you want man"😭

please for the love of god tell me its in key this time, I think I was always making the 808s follow the exact progression and not the root notes, I thought root notes where always the 1st note of each chord

Yo shopping on xperiment is pretty 🔥

I noticed lone gets a lot of hate now a days but I still like his music, I’ve been looping the same 4-5 songs (knocking, wrist , wheredoistart, outofmybody, interlude/stars) and played this one and it’s def up there for me now I like it

Unit above me caused a flood and damaged many of my personal belongings that the apartment underreported

I was visiting home on vacay and a day before flying out I got a call from the maintenance team that they needed to inspect my apartment due to a flood upstairs.

while I was on the plane, the operations managers said it caused notable damage and that they needed to work on my place asap (something about tearing apart the walls, sealants, blah blah).

the lady said the only belongings noted with damage was a pair of shoes getting wet but my couch felt damp, rug got completely soaked (which was under the couch and missing when I got back, they had professional cleaners come get it and he said it was completely soaked), my apple Studio Display has water marks, whole desk had water marks, surround sound speakers have water marks, etc.

I got all of it on video and photographed and they said the insurance for the property will handle it and get back to me. I’m currently in a hotel (paid for by apartment with meal stipdend) for the next 5 days and my place should be done by Saturday but wondering how this will pan out in terms of all my items that got caught with water. there was a lot of back n forth as they were trying to stick me in a shitty motel with no AC when I pay $3k a month for rent

the unit above me has also caused my sink to clog twice due to him pouring oil down the sink and the apartment had to fix the pipes

im under the assumption his insurance will try to fuck me over and not pay for anything or replace it, how can I ensure that doesn’t happen? everything in here is under a year old and I literally just bought my studio monitor 2 months ago :(

frankly I’m too busy to do any run arounds if it starts happening, if that’s the case can I hire an attorney?

EDIT: I have liability renters insurance that comes with the apartment, not sure how that’s relevant when I didn’t cause this? am I fucked?

has a run in with an opium rapper, interesting fella

there was this man sitting next to me on the plane who look like he had a famous aura but I couldn’t put a finger on it. I asked what he does for a living and he said he was a rapper for opium.

i asked what opium was and he was like “you know Playboi Carti? that kind of music” and I was like “ohhh that’s so fkn cool I love Carti.”

he then stared into my soul and said “if looks could kill, you’d be the fashion demon.”

never got his name but nice fella

(9 second loop) Trying to get the fundamentals of grove and music theory down

working on my chords/progression and adding sounds to make it more melodic without clutter.

cut the subs off everything but the 808 & bass (slight distortion and soft clipping on 808 and master). EQd the synths and drums and cut the lows off em.

def wanna do some reverbs/delays/filtering but wanna have a solid sound first

i love anything mike dean or psychedelic trap. im not really about heavy slamming drums and stuff. if anyone has some cool artists or channels to follow that’d be great

Struggling as a newbie, I’m making loops everyday but they all suck and seem random

I got on this about 1-2 months ago and ngl it’s super fun. The issue is my sounds are just so basic and bland, one melody, drums (more intentional now with giving them space and making them bouncy), and a choir/chord.

i don’t know how to add more sounds to make the beat more ‘fun’ or ‘catchy’ everything just ends up clashing and seems random. I watch some reels for inspiration and see these guys adding 2-3 instruments to their melody and it all fits perfect and I’m like wtf how

ill watch a video on music theory but have no clue how to apply it to what i want, I've taken some songs and split the stems to copy them, then realize idk what certain sound is playing. Then I’ll just say f it and copy a tutorial remaking my favorite song, only to find I have none of the plugins😂. Then 3 hours go by and I haven’t done anything

im lost on how “get better at beats by making more beats” helps if im consistently making the same errors with no way of fixing them. garbage in = garbage out

id say the biggest positive is I’ve been more intentional about arrangement, transitions, fx, mixing (EQing mostly) and that made the biggest difference positively, it made it feel more ‘polished’ and real. Or if I can find a chord or melody from a song I love the inspiration comes through and I make a beat I like but realize I didn’t make the melody/chords

Bros that a was a fun drop

ngl I had a lot of fun the hype around here and IG with Ken’s drop. I won’t forget I smoked one of those keef infused joints and wheredoistart, interlude and wrist were blowing my mind.

it was like 1am and I was like ight I’ll listen to the bottom half tmrw then I log in here and see dude post a thread saying “KNOCKING IS SO GOOD HOLY SHIT.” before it got taken down by a mod lmao

im was like I might as well listen…I ended up staying up till 3am just legit looping it 😂, shit was so good, thanks to whoever made that thread

see u guys again for cartunez🫡

Pairing ARPs with other sounds?

I recently discovered ARPs and ngl it's a huge timesaver just getting one that sounds good and getting a vibe going instantly so I can focus more on my drums/fx/arrangements/ear candy stuff like that. Def feels like cheating in a way lol but I waste so much time trying to make melodies and find instruments.

What I do is find an ARP I like and make some sequences with it, use a long note to create tension, flip registers in different loops to make the arrangement better, etc.

I'm just finding it hard to spice it up more an add cooler sounds on top of it since it takes away from the ARP and starts sounding out of place and random.

Is that a sign to not over complicate it? I'm sure reversing or using gross beat on it or some filters can be a way to make it more dynamic ig.
