Coolant Change - First time on the Mazda5

I continue to work through my 2015 Mazda5 to-do list since I bought it earlier this year. Next up is a coolant change. I found this video which is pretty good, but different than the method I've used on other cars:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMXQUGiis20

The said he was following the Mazda procedure, but you know how that can go. The steps are, in summary:

  1. Drain coolant
  2. Drain reservoir (and clean)
  3. Rinse radiator and reservoir with distilled water
  4. Refill
  5. Run engine at 2500 RPM for five minutes, then run up to 3000 RPM for 5 seconds
  6. Let engine cool; check coolant and top off
  7. Repeat steps 5-6 until it is bled out

Here is what is different to me:

  • No running the engine during draining or change out
  • No cooling system flush
  • No running of heater (though this guy did it to be safe)

The top comment on the video indicates that this was done correctly and why do you don't do the flush or running of the engine. I'm going to troll Mazda 24/7 to see what I can find.

Anyone have experience with changing the coolant?

Headlights Restored - Small But Simple

My 2016 Mazda3 needed it's headlights restored, so I tried Cerakote's ceramic kit and it worked like a dream. Since the headlights are smaller than some vehicles, I had enough to do my 2015 Mazda5 Sport, which were not too badly oxidized. It was super easy, but I meticulously followed directions and watched the video a couple times. $20 for both cars and about 20 minutes each...a no brainer. Safety and style.

My turn for the TCM issue

My 2015 had a leaky transmission pan, so I just had a new gasket installed, filter, and fluid replaced. Two days later (this morning) the check engine light came on, so I figured it was the tranny. I couldn't find my code reader, so I picked up a cheap one and scan reveals P0771. Not surprised, as it has been shifting a little rough since I bought her in February. I was already planning to replace the TCM, so no biggie there.

I had a 2009 for 12 years and 110k miles, with no TCM or shifting issues. I guess my luck ran out. Funny that the check engine light came on after that repair. Hoping there is no solenoid damage. For now, I'm going to pick up the TCM on Amazon :

It's US$178. Is this too good of a deal? Price seems low and is cheaper than an Upfix rebuild.

Backup Camera Placement - Suggestions?

This is my 'new' Mazda5 Sport 2015. I am replacing the head unit and have a backup camera I am going to install, since both my kids will end up driving this at some point (okay, I like it too). It is a Jensen BUCAM200J.

I can't figure out where to put it. The black box in the picture is the license plate. I've seen camera license plate frames, but I don't know if that will work with the plate light.

Anyone else have a similar situation and solution?
