Hawkeye’s First and Last Photo

Hawkeye lived a wonderful 13 years and left us peacefully, without much suffering, and far too quickly. He had a happy life as a lazy couch dog whose favorite place was wherever his people were. He struggled with separation anxiety and managed to destroy doors in pretty much every apartment we ever lived in. One unexpected upside of the COVID years was that we could stay home with him almost all the time — and he absolutely loved that. He was incredibly gentle with children and kind to everyone he met. He also had a strange obsession with paper tissues, which he considered an irresistible delicacy.

More than once, Hawkeye cheated death. The most dramatic example was when he swallowed a peach pit, developed intestinal necrosis, and had to have half of his intestine removed. Against the odds, he recovered and went on to enjoy another seven years of happy, comfortable life. He never listened particularly well, and in his later years he became deaf, but none of that made him any less lovable. He was stubborn, funny, and completely himself until the very end. We were lucky to have him, and we will miss him every day.
