I do a full on run of the expanse audiobooks every couple of years. They’re one of my recurring go to’s.

I will say - while I love the world they created, I do get less interested after book 3. But they’re still good

These first two books of the Captives War feel like they’re written by a different author(s) though!

And I love it

I want to say it feels tighter (well they are shorter) - but that’s not it. I am fascinated / horrified by the carryx.

I love how indifferent they are to humans

I went in blind and when the invasion started in book 1 I had to stop what I was doing and lock in because I couldn’t believe what was happening.

But I’ve just started listening to Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson.

I don’t know if it’s the narrator or the author, but I’m reallllllly struggling to grasp the “1975”-ishness. It feels like I’m listening to a story some author wrote. Like when you’re watching a movie and you’re just like “that’s just Matt Damon pretending to be a spy” or whatever.

I’m not getting lost in the prose. How about that.

Anyway- I’m kinda getting into it.

And then the protagonist’s best friend - a PTSD riddled, recently returned Nam vet - is just an openly gay man?

I have absolutely zero qualms about a gay character. But it just feels so out of place in this already pretty thin 1975 that I don’t know if I should keep going.

I think I’m just going to go read a nonfiction book about gay vets’ and their lived experience in post Vietnam America.

OR - is this literally the first two published chapters of this guys writing career, and we’re going to see some amazing progress in skills as we proceed.
