Original Movie/Show Title: The Bride!
Original Running Time: 126 minutes
Fanedit Running Time: 106 minutes
Synopsis:
A lonely Frankenstein asks a groundbreaking scientist to create a companion for him. What ensues is beyond what anyone imagined.
Main Goals:
To remove the Mary Shelley character all together. The Bride is just wildly eccentric because she was brought back from the dead. That's it. She is just unapologetically herself. We never really find out what she was like before besides the quick intro, and while she learns who she was before, this resurrected version is the new person she is now. And she is awesome. Dialing back the cops' heavy-handed storyline and over-exposition a bit. Malloy is the real detective, and James is gay, not crooked - just was a bad detective that got girls killed by using them as informants. Also removing the "media sequence" of the Brain Attack movement.
Intention:
OK - wow, where to begin? What a mess of a theatrical release - another movie I really wanted to love, but it seemed to take that as a challenge. The trailers were minimal and let me imagine a crazy wild movie that i had no idea what to expect - and I guess that's what we got? But this movie had layers on layers on preachy preachy layers. HOLY CRAP. Nothing what what I expected. The first trailer made me think it was gangster Frankenstein that had his henchmen get a live girl and killed, then reanimated her. I had no idea... Mary fucking Shelley. I feel like I could rant for days, but in summary - the addition of this overarching angle, of Mary Shelley possessing this woman in her own effort to write a sequel, completely derailed whatever wild journey that this story went on. I mean, a reference to the Mel Brooks movie Young Frankenstein seemed completely out of place with Mary Shelley running things. At least in my opinion.
SO. I could not resist at least seeing what what left is Mary Shelly was removed... and holy crap there is a diamond here. Personally, I love characters that completely defy what is expected of them, to glowing success. The ones that break all the rules. And without Mary, this becomes a strong willed woman who, upon her second chance at life even without her memory, she refuses to act within the oppressive system she finds herself. And Frank, OMG Frank! This guy, I love this guy!!! This movie deserves an edit just to let Frank shine, but Penny and Frank have an absolute classic star-crossed lover in this bonkers Romeo and Juliet and Bonnie and Clyde mashup. I was blown away at how awesome what's left actually is!
Cuts and Additions:
- Removed Mary Shelly intro.
- Removed Ida's intro and death.
- Added intro credits to Frank's walk in Chicago and removed Frank's first interaction with a scared pedestrian.
- Removed Frank introducing his "Frankenstein" name to Dr. Euphronious, she figures it out herself.
- Adjusted a moment of Dr. Euphronious examining Frank to better draw attention to where he pulled out his traditional Frankenstein neck bolts.
- Removed Frank asking for "An intercourse" specifically at first.
- Removed a couple shots of the Bride during the reinvigoration process to better keep the process from the POV of Dr. Euphronious and Frank until the Bride wakes up.
- Added title to The Bride waking up.
- Removed first Mary/Ida vision with a tightened cut of the gang member James forcing oysters on Ida and adjusted to her saying "I'd Prefer Not To", and changed to B&W to better transition from Frank's dance vision. This is the only flashback she gets, and its added to better explain her death and her enjoyment of the line "I'd Prefer Not To" which she will go on using. Its also added to try and in her personal taste on oysters, hopefully not in an obvious way.
- Removed Dr. Euphronious pointing out the broken bulb spot on the ceiling, so the broken glass is implied to be Frank's fault.
- Removed Dr. Euphronious remarking how well read she is.
- The back alley dance floor assault is recut so Frank's interaction with the server is removed, as well as her big speech.
- Removed one of Franks curb stomp kicks.
- Removed third Mary/Ida vision with Ida's head in a jar.
- Tightened the first appearance of the cops at the alley murder scene.
- Tightened up the cops arrival at the railroad tracks murder scene, and the dialogue in the diner a little.
- Tightened cop dialogue when they see the mob chasing Frank and Ida.
- Fixed out of position shot at the beginning of Frank's dance in front of Ronnie Reed.
- Removed media coverage of the Brain Attack movement beyond Dr. Euphronious seeing the newspaper headline.
- Removed Lupino implying that Ida was Gangster Clyde's side piece.
- Tightened scene of Malloy questioning Wiles about the Bride looking right at him.
- Slightly tightened cops discussion on the car ride about Malloy getting recognition for her work.
- Dialed back some of the patrolman's assault on Ida before getting shot, and removed the oyster joke she heard from Gangster James when she was alive.
- Removed Ida telling Frank she wants Mary out of her head.
- Tightened Wiles confrontation with Ida to remove the implications of Wiles and Ida having sex.
- Adjusted dialogue of Cop Wiles telling Cop Malloy how he knows Ida - that he put her and other girls in extreme danger to try to get info on Lupino. Also adjusted dialogue so that he is retiring from shame and making Malloy his replacement, his choice.
- Removed Ida talking to Mary in the car while Frank is in the back.
- Removed Ida asking for Mary's help, and Mary's last lines.
- Removed Greta and the Doctor's discussion about sleeping, and preferring not to.
