Why so much Japan love?

First off, I understand Pete loves any and all things Japan. But I don't really get the amount of respect Japan garners not only amongst the Ramblers but other pundits at large.

- Japan has never won a knockout match in the World Cup (even as a co-host in 2002).

- Japan has qualified for the main draw of the World Cup 8 times in a row, certainly impressive. But South Korea has qualified 11 times in a row and Australia has qualified every single time (4) since joining AFC.

- Japanese squad has 13 players in the top 5 leagues. But so does Sweden in the same group. And there are other squads with similar level of talent.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching their matches, especially the Brazil clash. But I just don't get the level of love and respect for this team. Is this just a case of being the best from a weak confederation? Or a case of rooting for someone different/exotic/underdog? What am I missing?
