Danke!

Took apart a Convoy switch out of curiosity - here’s what’s inside

Couldn’t find a teardown pic anywhere so figured I’d share one since I had a squeaky one lying around (this one).

Its basically a clicky pen mechanism in disguise: 3 white plastic pieces that rotate against each other via little teeth/notches, a return spring, and a metal disc with a post that acts as the plunger.
Push it down, the disc bridges the two contact pads on the PCB, circuit closed. Same rotating-cam trick as a retractable ballpoint - it’s what gives you that satisfying click feel each press.

PCB’s dead simple: just pads and leads out to the driver. Neat seeing how much is going on inside such a tiny momentary switch.

Thought some of you guys might appreciate the guts shot.

First Convoy lights: T5/S6/S7 first impressions and a few gripes (1800K, 2700K, 3500K, 5000K)

I've received my first Convoy lights in the last few weeks and more orders are already on their way… what a rabbit hole!

Here's my attempt to summarize my initial impressions/first steps:

The black T5 remains unchanged with a 60 deg bead TIR and 5000K. It's almost too cool for me now so I might dedome it. It's very pleasant during the day though, so I'm still undecided. The switch is perfect: responsive, smooth, silent and reacts great to taps.

The green T5 with 2700K was later equipped with a 20 deg bead TIR and I'm currently leaning toward upgrading the other two T5s the same way, as it's the ideal compromise for me: light that's a bit focused but also spreads nicely. The switch is very responsive but unfortunately it squeaks a bit, so I've already ordered a replacement for that one.
2700K has become my current favorite: perfect in the evening and at night for illuminating the area around the house and on the go without irritating the eyes and all colors remain perfectly recognizable.

The MAO T5 looks decent and feels great in the hand. But it's my first and last MAO flashlight. As expected, the threads weren't greased and produced dust when I unscrewed them. I put some silicone grease on them and now they look black and dirty. On top of that, it's not possible to lock this MAO light by unscrewing it slightly.
1800K is just too extreme for me – I could have gone straight for the SST-20-DR instead. ;)
Unfortunately, the switch is pretty hard to press and really squeaks, too, so that's another cheap replacement already on order.

What really bothers me about the T5 in general is the lack of a moonlight mode. 1% is way too bright for me. Using an AA helps a little with this.

Due to their size and weight the stonewashed S6 and glossy S7 are only limitedly practical for everyday use as they, unlike the T5, can't fit in my pants pocket. But that's ok, I think they look and feel absolutely great so I've already ordered two more S7s: a stonewashed S7 and another glossy S7 that I can place around the house.

The S6 has a color temperature of 3500K and thanks to the OP reflector it produces a beautifully shaped spot with pleasant spill. It's more than usable indoors for short distances as well. I briefly worried that it might have too much throw but that concern proved unfounded. Unless you hold it right next to a light with 2700K, 3500K isn't actually that much cooler – definitely a good compromise for everyday use for many people. This switch squeaks a bit as well and there's quite a noticeable air gap between the silicone button and the switch, so I already grabbed an inexpensive (colored) replacement for it too.

The S7 is my absolute favorite right now: 2700K is wonderful and the spot and spill are perfect for me, just like on the S6. The switch is, much like on the black T5, incredibly precise, smooth and doesn't squeak at all. Visually this model is by far the most appealing to me.

Just in case you overlooked it in the pictures: all the lamps have a Nichia 519a LED. I'm sticking with that for now. Not a single lamp, aside from those really annoying squeaky switches, has any manufacturing defects: threads, anodizing, MAO and SS finish: 10 out of 10!
But still, 3 out of 5 switches that squeak (it really is the switches, not the button rubbing against something) is kind of a lot. But considering the replacement costs just a few cents and takes only a few minutes of work I don't think it's a big deal.

And in case anyone's interested: all the lamps run in Group 8 without memory mode.

Thanks for reading!

First Convoy order, send help

Finally giving in and adding Convoy to my collection.

Ordered a T5 MAO in 1800k just for fun and a black T5 in 5000k as a maybe-daily-driver.

Not much money involved so no big deal if they don't impress me, but still hope I won't regret it. First time buying from this brand, let's see how it goes. 🔦
