Disappointed with custom ring - unsure if I'm being too picky

I recently got engaged (yay!) but couldn't felt but feel let down by how my engagement ring looked. This was a custom ring and I was very involved in the design process, and I was really excited for the final product.

The reference image and the actual ring have very different proportions in terms of the stone and the metal work surrounding it. I feel like I'm wearing a shield on my finger, and the vibe is completly different.

I had also expected to be able to see more of the leaves on either side of the gemstone from the top down view just purely based off the reference picture. Instead they curve up - is this something I should have known?

I brought these concerns up with the jeweler and his response was: "It’s important to keep in mind that we were working on the design without the exact centre stone, and drawings aren’t always 1-1 with a finished, three dimensional piece. Once I had the centre stone cut and ready, I did my best to interpret the design to the best of my ability, and I’m very proud of the ring

Not being able to see the leaves is mostly due of the ring being curved around the finger, the drawing being a flattened version of that to show the band and setting at the same time.

I did provide [fiance] with lots of progress pictures while I was making it, I was under the impression that we were trying to keep it as a surprise as much as possible and didn’t want to ruin that.

If you would like, I would be happy to make some alterations to the ring for you to bring the petals above and below the centre stone closer to in, so they don’t take attention away from the sapphire?"

I do really like the craftsmanship, but I guess I'm just unhappy because I wish he had consulted me once he had the gem in hand instead of 'interpreting the design to the best of his ability'. He sent through a redesign suggestion (purple colour showing what he will remove), but it just still looks off and I really don't know how we can redesign it without redoing the whole ring at this point because the leaves on either side just seemed to be an important feature of framing the stone. Am I overreacting?
