Gave up on neet recently thinking of BSc Zoology → IIT JAM BT → PhD. Is this realistic?

I’m a 3rd-year student doing a 4-year BSc Hons Zoology from LNMU (Tier-3 college), graduating in 2028.

I’m thinking of this path:

BSc Zoology → research internships during 3rd/4th year → IIT JAM Biotechnology/GATE-B/CUET-PG → MSc at IIT ( or whatever college i get into)→ strong research experience → PhD in Germny → research career.

I’m interested in genetics, molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology, neuroscience, etc.

My questions:

Am I eligible for IIT JAM Biotechnology with BSc Zoology?

Is this overall path realistic?

Can good internships/research experience

compensate for coming from a Tier-3 university? And can I get into summer/winter internships if I am from tier 3 college?

I recently decided to close the NEET chapter and pursue research, but I still have doubts sometimes. Would really appreciate honest advice from seniors ans people who know about this. I come from lil financially weak family.. am I being realistic to think all of this.

I decided to close the chapter of neet. I really need your help.

Hi everyone,

I'm 21F from India and currently pursuing a 4-year B.Sc. Zoology (Honours) from LNMU ( a universityin bihar). I have a CGPA of around 9.5 and will be entering my third year after my exams this week.

My long-term goal is to settle abroad. Recently, I've become very interested in genetics, especially human genetics, Down syndrome, cancer biology, and biomedical research. I'm still learning about these fields, so I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I genuinely want to explore them.

My current plan is:

Learn Python and then move into bioinformatics (Biopython, BLAST, NCBI, etc.).

Apply for research internships at places like IISERs, IITs, CSIR labs, NCBS, IGIB, CDFD, etc.

Build a strong CV with research experience.

Apply for M.Sc. programs in Germany.

If Germany doesn't work out, do an M.Sc. from a good Indian university (IIT, BHU, etc.) and later apply for a funded Ph.D. abroad.

What worries me is:

-My university isn't very well known.

-I have no research projects yet.

-I haven't won Olympiads or major competitions.

-My family income is around ₹30,000–40,000 per month, so finances are a real concern if I get into Germany.

-I'm worried that I may not get internships, and even if I do, I may not get into a German university or a funded Ph.D. later.

I'm not looking for reassurance...I want honest opinions.

Based on my profile, does this seem like a realistic path if I'm willing to work very hard over the next two years? Are there any major flaws in my plan that I'm missing? If you were in my position, what would you do differently?

I'd especially appreciate advice from people who went from a non-tier-1 Indian university to Germany or another country for research or graduate studies.

Thank you!
