At 20 weeks 27mm with bleeding and “debris of no concern”. Now 21.5 weeks work 17mm cervix and sludge. No more bleeding.

First off, we’re Americans in NZ battling with a very strained healthcare system. Apparently it takes you almost losing your baby before doctors get involved and start trying to find real answers.

My wife had a leve SCH at 7 weeks that wasn’t visible by 17 weeks. A few small bleed and a large one at 20 weeks. Cause unknown. Put on blood clot medication and released after 24 hours and no more bleeds. A week later she has a scan that shows a short cervix (17mm) and is sent back to hospital. Sludge is shown and doctor tells us we could delivery that day. Oh wait, never mind. Bloodwork is clear, swabs are clear. Wife and baby are fine. Released with follow up appointment at 23 weeks to assess cervix. Cerclage postponed because risk of infection. Put on oral progesterone.

Did I mention this is an IVF baby? Her fourth try after two miscarriages and a failed transfer. Perfectly healthy baby.

Our first midwife was so shit and dismissive and would not keep us on progesterone despite bleeding. Found a new one who is better.

Overall miserable experience. I do not fully trust health providers here yet.

I am seeing here many patients with cervical sludge on antibiotics even if bloodwork and smear come back “ok”. Should we push for her to be on antibiotics or ask doctors why not? What’s the downside at this point really? Understand risk of cerclage but not for not having her on even preventative antibiotics.

Would love any evidence that supports use of antibiotics with sludge. Also any feedback that may give us a glimmer of hope our baby will live.
