Bris Alternative Option

So I'm feeling a bit of a crisis of Faith right now with this decision, and I wanted to see people's reactions. We are about to have a baby boy, and my wife is ethnically Jewish but was not raised religiously Jewish. While she agrees that we should raise our son Jewish, one thing she feels very strongly about is not circumcising our son, in part due to family trauma.

I'm not completely against the idea, there is a part of me that does appreciate giving him the option to fully and brace the Jewish community by choosing circumcision. But I also feel like Brit Shalom is not enough and too hokey. I have talked to my local Rabbi, and we've thought about basically doing the pinprick as a middle ground, but unsurprisingly we can't find a mohel who would be involved and I increasingly feel this is just a Brit Shalom with window dressing.

I wanted to reach out to the community to get thoughts on this, if that does sound like a potential good idea or if I'm kidding myself. I am friends with people who are more religious than me who have not circumcised their kids, and it has worked out in that they are at peace with the choice and their child is not alienated from being Jewish and is even considering being circumcised. But I'm still worried that I'm being a hypocrite as a Jew not going through with it. But at the same time, as the one in the relationship not giving birth, I of course don't want to dismiss my wife's concerns.

Theater Marquee Follow Up

I'm sure some of you have been following the news about that movie theater with the offensive marquee for the Odyssey movie. There's definitely been some confusion on whether the guy who owns it was just trying to be provocative in a South Park kind of way and was just an idiot, or whether he was really being antisemitic. Well they just released a local article about it, and he's quoted explaining why he did it, and....it's definitely a doozy.

I'll post the link here, It's one of these "You can read at least an article for free" so people should be able to access it: https://lakeoswegoreview.com/2026/07/17/lake-oswego-theater-marquee-sparks-outrage-in-jewish-community/#. But just to show the relevant quote in full

>“My intention is never to influence opinion or fan flames, but to say: it’s okay to raise eyebrows, though I hope my messages reflect a depth of understanding others find in themselves but not always in the world around them,” said Perry by text message. “Through the media I consume, I believe modern-day antisemitism is exaggerated, mostly as a defense for Israel’s actions in the Middle East and its involvement in our politics, and my intention in referencing Jewish people on the marquee was to prod at everything being seemingly antisemitic with a statement that couldn’t possibly be construed as antisemitic.”

>He added: “My intention was not to offend anyone, but rather to push back culturally back on what constitutes antisemitism, to signal, in solidarity, that it’s not about ‘the Jews,’ that it’s about Israel, and Palestine, and Lebanon, and Iran, and AIPAC. This is my ‘humor,’ this was the point, intentionally subtle, of what I put on the marquee.”

So, he's making fun of "overblown" antisemitism by....making an antisemitic joke. I feel like it says a lot about people's mindset nowadays...

Edit: Just to follow up, he's taken down "Jews"...and replaced it with "Waze". Making an "antizionist" jab or choosing something that would fit the "joke" that's also 4 letters? Ugh....

Thoughts on Noah vs Avi

My wife and I are discussing first names, my wife really likes Noah but my mom's name starts with an N so I feel hesitant in the Ashkenazi tradition. I'm considering Avi as an alternative, I kind of wanted people's thoughts on if I should be hesitant and thoughts on the name Avi.
