how long did it take you guys to start improvising well on drums? and what helped you the most?

i’ve been playing a couple years and i can improvise grooves really well but my fills are always simple (unless i really push myself and practice it over and over). it’s really hard for me to play a complicated fill first try, i always have to really think about it first. im starting to get discouraged:(

I also have pretty bad accent paralysis so if i do make up a complicated fill it still sounds mediocre bc i just can’t accent anything other than the first beat.

any tips/advice appreciated 🙏

going to college soon, gonna be living in a dorm and can’t take my drum kit (obviously), any advice?

i’ve only been playing about two years and i feel like im gonna lose all my progress when i leave. i’ve talked to a few school staff members that say there’s two drum kits that are open to students but i’m not sure how often i’ll be able to use them. i was looking at electric kits but i just dont know if it will fit in my dorm. but if anyone has recommendations for a small, portable one i will look into it. definitely bringing my practice pad though.
