Practice pads

I'm looking for a new practice pad to practice rudiments. Do you have any recommendations for a cheap one (I don't work yet, so I earn little money) that won't fall apart and get full of holes after a week of practice?

Besides the most cost-effective options, could you also send me some better options (even if more expensive) so I can add them to my shopping list for when I start working in a few years?

Also, I've seen some people making homemade pads. How do you make yours?

I need some drum heads louder than mesh but quieter than normal ones

I usually organize an open mic jam session with some friends in a cocktail bar every monday from 9:00 pm to 00:00.

Noise is quite an issue because the area is packed with neighbors, we obviously managed to lower the volume of: keys, bass and guitar quite easily, we put mesh heads over a kids drumset and now we can barely hear it. Is there anything else we could use to not be too loud without loosing to much of the drumset dynamics?

I am going to buy a drum kit if I…

…can continually practice rudiments every day for a month.

I have ADHD, I start and stop things all the time but have always loved drums, I have sticks I play with occasionally. I bought an alesis a few yrs back but being a tall guy I gave up on it as it was too small for me, should have tried it for dowse before buying but anyways!?

I want to learn but I don’t want to pay a small fortune for a kit and not use it so I’m committing to practising rudiments on a practice pad every day for a month, if I can complete that then I think I will keep going, build a good habit so to speak!!

That being said, can someone recommend a good 15/20 min follow along video of basic rudiments on YouTube? I need something that I can do daily and that’s easy to follow along and no more than 20mins (if I commit to too much I fear il give up,20 min is manageable at the start for me)

Thanks 🥁

What cymbals do you guys recommend

I’m looking to buy my first high end cymbal set and I’ve narrowed it down to two or three (Zildjian K custom Hybrid; K custom dark box; A custom).
Wich of these do you guys prefer and which one is the most versatile. I’m looking for something that can be used for stuff like metal as well as light rock so a versatile set would be the most useful. I’m going to look at them personally at my local but I just wanted to see what the populous thinks.

Gary Chaffee books

Hey drummers. I was just wondering what would be the best Gary Chaffee book to help deepen my understanding of quintuplets and septuplets ?

My “new” Pacific CX!

I recently picked up this kit in trade. It’s an all maple kit that sounds great! And it’s not so valuable I don’t feel guilty about making some modifications! I changed the kick drum from 22x18 to 22x14, the 12” tom went from 12x9 to 12x8, and the hanging floor toms grew legs. I found a second matching floor tom on reverb to make it a 6 piece. I’m really happy with this one!

Proud Parent: 10 y/o plays Tool at school talent show

My son played 46 and 2 at his school talent show, he freaking nailed it and I’m super proud of him. I imagine it’s the same feeling that some parents have when their kid hits their winning walk off grand slam in recreational baseball games but I’m very content with my son playing Tool instead lol.

He can play 46 and 2, schism, vicarious is almost done, and Stinkfist is almost done. What would you drummers recommend be the next step or the next best song to learn from tool? I’m considering teaching him the grudge next . Thank you.

Is this a good first direct-drive kick drum pedal? Is the price good as well?

Hi hi. I've been a chain drive pedal player for about a year now (dw3000). I've been trying to improve my doubles on the kick (I play a good amount of Blink-182 skank beats and RLRLKK stuff), and after playing a direct drive pedal that a bud of mine has, I was astounded by the responsiveness of the pedal, and the speed that I was capable of with it. I knew that I wanted one for myself.

Is this a good upgrade? I want something that I can tailor to my needs, and that I can comfortably get strong doubles with.

Also, is the price good? I'm seeing it for $485 on Sweetwater right now, and this pedal is about an hour drive away from me, so I wouldn't even have to pay for shipping or taxes.

Anyone have experience with this pedal? Is it a good upgrade to make?

Just looking to hear what other people have to say before I pull the trigger and get this thing.

Thanks

Debating between a few thrones

I’ve basically narrowed down my options to three main competitors, the Gibraltar 9608mb, the pearl d 2500-br and the dw 9000 airlift.
The only reason I’m not immediately going for the dw 9000 is because it’s expensive as hell and I’m a bit scared about the airlift system since I’ve heard some bad things about nitro thrones.
All of these thrones are in my budget but the airlift is kind of pushing, do you think it’s worth it? Also I’m not thinking about a roc n soc purely because I’m in Asia and not the us so getting the roc n soc would cost me more than the airlift

Crash not pushing through in overheads

Somewhat new drummer, new drum mic'er (hand-me-downs)! I think I've got a pretty decent capture of the overall kit except for my crash. Probably doesn't help that the crash is 16"... Only thing i would think is to lower the mic (which I feel is already considerably low), but how much more can condenser mics handle being closer to the cymbal? Cause It's already almost a foot away from the crash and I kinda don't wanna break the only other condenser I have.

Looking for practice advice for a new drummer

So I've been trying out playing in a band with the school of rock as an adult amateur musician and tried drums last season on 2 songs (i mainly play bass) had some fun doing some basic drum songs but this season there isn't a drummer and 2 bass players so I was asked to drum more and some of the songs seem wildly more difficult (for a newbie) looking for suggestions on a practice routine or skills I should be focusing on. Some of the proposed songs are Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar Valarie by Amy Winehouse and Under my thumb ( Streatheart cover )

Double Bass Pedal Recommendations - DW, Pearl, Long Board Syle, Speed Cobra, Etc.

Hello! I'm fairly new to drums, especially when it comes to different models, types, features, etc. I'm just upgraded my Roland TD 11 to the TD 516 (still setting it up but very excited). As I was setting it up, I deep dove into my double pedal settings, even more simpler than that, how to optimize double strokes on a single pedal.

I realized, that although it can accomplish it with my dw3000, I feel like the pedal length is not long enough so when I do the heel portion of it and then the top portion the heel portion doesn't always make a note, now admittedly, this could completely be me. I'm female so not crazy big feet but can get it easily if I rotate my foot slightly off the board.

I'm hoping to gain some recommendations you all would have for somebody who loves playing metal, not crazy fast metal like death metal or thrash metal, more metal core style along with other genres of music but I want to be able to consistently play double pedals and I have the ability to upgrade right now. I'd also love to be able to play Tool at some point so speed isn't the ultimate goal, instead versitily.

I was reading online that longboard direct drive pedals could potentially be the way to go but I also read that they are very unforgiving and maybe not great for beginners to intermediates. I also read that the dw5000s may have a better response than my 3000, and that the 9000s are top tier. But then I also read that Speed Cobras are up there along with DW9000S, Pearls, Etc. Just looking to get a idea of where to go because you all led me to the Roland 516 and know that you guys will help lead me to the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Carpal tunnel syndrome?! Terrified

For about a month and a half I’ve been having symptoms that seem like carpal tunnel syndrome. Now I feel slightly reduced sensation in my left thumb compared to my right, along with various neuropathic symptoms.

But I’m honestly falling into depression because I noticed my double stroke got worse. My left hand feels less agile, more rigid… I don’t know.

I already had an EMG done and it came back normal, so now I have no idea what to do.

Has anyone here gone through this, recovered, and returned to playing normally? I’m praying for positive responses. My mental health is really bad because of this.
