It’s hard to keep being right on the beat in a song for me

Hello everyone!

After learning Yellow, I started to learn a popular C-pop made by Jay Chou. It is much more difficult than Yello because there are more complex rhythms in this song.

I found out that I didn’t know when was the exact time to start my playing without watching the videos. I don’t know how to count in a song. And I wonder how those drummers make it when play in a band or other real performance.

Specifically, I’m having a hard time with rests that combine hands, snare, and bass drum. Also, 16th-note patterns mixing hand movements and bass drum hits are giving me a lot of trouble.

Any tips or exercises to help build better coordination and timing for these? Thanks!

Stick control challenging, just for fun and no doubt I failed lol

Hello everyone.Lots of people here recommended the book Stick Control. I watched a video on YouTube tonight which taught people how to practice stick control.

It was really fast.152 bpm 16th notes. It was ok for me to play 16th notes with RLRL.But when it came to RRLL, it really killed me.couldn’t follow a bit.

Better to get back to slower beats 😅

When play in the band will the drummer use metronome or other ways to keep stable on the beat?

Hello everyone 👋

I learned to play 16th notes, two 16th and an 8th,an 8th and two 16th these days.learning new things makes it more interesting but also more difficult.

I still can’t play just right on the beat.

I have a question to drummers who already play in the band or other formal performances. Will you use metronome or other ways to keep stable on the beat?or you just play the beat with your experience?

And if you use metronome what kind of beat you play?like always 4th notes?

My teacher set up 4th notes for me but I played 8th or 16th. I don’t know whether it would be different when play in the band or other formal performances?

Since I am a beginner and my English is not very good. I am sorry if I ask stupid questions but I really hope someone could tell me the truth.

Thank you so much!

Feel happy to make progress on playing Yellow 💪

Hey everyone.First of all still wanna say thank you to those kind people who gave me advice here. I think I am making progress and I feel happy about that.

I played drums with music track going along today. This was the first time I played with music and it was much more entertaining than playing pad lol (Though I do think practicing with pad is very important!)

But I made a lot of mistakes too.sometimes I forgot the beat and I was either rushing or dragging at the very beginning.Anyway practice makes perfect. I should not be afraid to make mistakes!

If you have any suggestions for me please let me know😬

Why I can’t stay just right on the beat for more than 1 minutes 😭

Hey everyone! I’m trying to learn to play Yellow these days.and the beat is 87 bpm. I practiced the rhythm with e-drums tonight without music.just played the beat. And I felt a little bit boring so I turned on the music but I found out I couldn’t follow at all. It’s too fast.and with the music I felt like I couldn’t focused on my clicks.

So when I went home. I set up my metronome. I used 174 bpm to feel the beat with practicing on pad. I found out sometimes I was on the beat but most of time I was rushing or dragging because I could hear the sound of metronome clearly.

I wonder why.is this because I am not concentrated enough?also I felt a little bit down because I didn’t make progress on playing a song.things is getting harder and harder to me.

How to know you are off the beat or not

Hello everyone!I tried to use the lower beat to train tonight. I think I’m on the beat, but I don’t know whether I am wrong or not because someone told me if I was on the beat I could not hear the sound of the metronome but actually when I watched my video I could both hear the sound of my metronome and my sticks 😂

If you have any ideas about that, please let me know. Thank you so much! I would love to hear your experience and the stories on the journey of learning drums!

Is there any one who has the same experience?

Hello everyone! I went to play drums last night. And it all felt good until 4 hours later I felt pain in the knuckle of index finger which I had highlighted in the picture. I wonder whether it was because the sticks grip was not right or not.My right hand is totally fine.after one night sleep I feel no pain now.

Is there anyone who has this same kind of experience or pain?what did you do to help?thank you so much!

Pratice pad did help!

Hey everyone! I went to training institutions today and I play real drums kit.when I watched my video I thought I was much more relaxed than the first video I posted here! I think practice pad did help.now I am used to hold the sticks just like I played on the pad when I play real kits! I am happy about that.At the very beginning I am being a little bit frustrated because I don’t think I am making progress and I push myself hard, hoping I could play a song as soon as possible. But now I think I should just practice as much as possible and it will lead me to that way!

Thank you for all those kind people who gave me advice here!☺️

Why is using pad to practice being so important to the new beginners

Hello guys!Again I am so grateful that lots of people give me advice here on the journey of learning to play drums. I am still using practice pad to play. I want to make it even. I think I I’m doing better when I watched the video. I think I need to go back to the training institutions to play real kits lol 😆 but I do feel a little bit nervous because I don’t know whether it would be much different between practicing pad and drums kits.

Since I am using pad to practice I wonder what’s the point of doing this?why is using pad to practice being so important to the new beginners?and what things would happen if I keep practicing on pad?The practice pad is useful to help to build up an even beat right? Also I want to know what is the next step to the practice pad?should I set up a fast beat?if you have any advice please let me know. Thanks!

Could anyone tell me I’m rushing or slow

After 30 minutes of practicing on pad I couldn’t figure out the sound of my sticks and metronome lol. I tried to play in 100bpm. It was way fast to me.This was my first try and it wasn’t interesting that at the end I lost my mind and just my body moved.like the sound and my brain and my body totally separated.

To anyone help me to figure out whether I was rushing or slow?Thank you so much for your help!

got my 5A sticks today

Hello everyone! Thanks for giving me lots of suggestions on my last post. I bought 5A sticks and got them today. I used it to practice.

This time I tried to use my wrist instead of my hand to up and down. I found out that my left hand was not as good as right hand. I hoped I was practicing in a right way now. I also bought protective headphones. When I get them I will go to the training institutions to play with kits again.good luck to me!

And if you have any suggestions please tell me. Thank you so much for your helping on my road to learn drums!

Try to use practice pad to follow the beat but still think I’m so stiff

Hi there!it’s me again, who is learning to play drums. I got practice pad few weeks ago and sometimes I used it to help me follow the beat.when I watched the video I founded out several problems.

  1. I look stiff as lots of people here had told me. I wonder whether it is because my shoulder locked.maybe I should not lock my shoulder?

2.my right hand and my left hand were not at the same hight.my right hand was lower than my left hand. I wonder whether this is the reason that sound is different?

If you have any suggestions to me please tell me.Also I don’t know whether I am fine in following the beat or not in this video.

Thank you so much 😊
