The fate of the 10 "worst" newly promoted teams of the last 20 years
| Rank | Year | Team | Pre-season relegation odds (implied survival %) | Actual Position | Actual Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 2007-08 | Derby | 11/20 (35%) | 20 (R) | 11 |
| 8= | 2022-23 | Bournemouth | 4/9 (31%) | 15 | 39 |
| 8= | 2013-14 | Crystal Palace | 4/9 (31%) | 11 | 45 |
| 6= | 2025-26 | Sunderland | 2/5 (29%) | 7 | 54 |
| 6= | 2024-25 | Leicester | 2/5 (29%) | 18 (R) | 25 |
| 5 | 2008-09 | Stoke | 4/11 (27%) | 12 | 45 |
| 3= | 2025-26 | Burnley | 1/3 (25%) | 19 (R) | 22 |
| 3= | 2023-24 | Luton | 1/3 (25%) | 18 (R) | 26 |
| 1= | 2010-11 | Blackpool | 2/7 (22%) | 19 (R) | 39 |
| 1= | 2008-09 | Hull | 2/7 (22%) | 17 | 35 |
2026-27 Hull have been given 1/5 odds of relegation, a 17% implied survival probability. I can't be bothered to check any further back than 20 years (records are becoming impossible to find anyway), but I'd wager no team has been given worse odds. Coventry and Ipswich sit at 8/11 (42% survival).
Some other interesting facts I found while researching this:
- In the last 20 years, no non-newly-promoted side has been odds-on for relegation. Of the 60 newly promoted sides, 29 have been considered odds-on for relegation. Of those 60, 28 went down. If we include this year, that figure becomes 32/62, over half.
- The "best" newly promoted side by this metric were 2018-19 Wolves, who were 7/1 to go down. They went on to finish 7th with 57 points.
- The "best" newly promoted side to go down were 2023-24 Burnley, who were 7/2 for relegation, yet finished 19th with 24 points.
- The worst year for newly promoted teams was slated to be 2008-09, with a mean survival probability of 30% between them (Hull, Stoke, WBA). Despite having the best odds (8/11, 42%) of the three, it was only WBA who went down, while Hull and Stoke survived.
- The best year for newly promoted teams was slated to be 2018-19, with a mean survival probability of 64% between the three teams (Wolves, Cardiff, Fulham). However, both Cardiff and Fulham ended up relegated this season.
- The mean survival probability of the newly promoted teams have dropped steadily every year since 2020-21: From 58%, to 50%, to 47%, to 46%, to 42%, to 36%, to just 34% this year.
