I hated this scene, but not because Will was shown drinking.
I hated it because it reduced his character to his sexuality. I hated it because it was one of the only glimpses we got of his supposed future, and instead of showing him pursuing something that has always been fundamental to who he is, it showed him sitting in a bar. Art has been a core part of Will's character since the very beginning, and it would have been far more meaningful to end his arc by showing him at art school, something that reflected his passions and growth as a person.
Those are my issues with the scene.
That said, I've seen people argue that Will would never touch alcohol, and I think that's taking things a little too far. Having a drink occasionally doesn't make someone an alcoholic, nor would it magically turn him into Lonnie. I can't really see Will smoking, considering he's witnessed the toll it took on Joyce and has openly expressed his dislike of it. But alcohol? Come on, guys. Let the man have a drink once in a while. After everything he's been through, he honestly deserves it.
Will has always shown a great deal of self control. He knows exactly what his father was like, and I don't think he'd blindly follow the same path. I can absolutely picture him having a celebratory drink with his friends from art school after an exhibition, graduation, or some other milestone.
What bothers me is the insistence that he would never set foot in a bar or ever drink a beer. It feels a little infantilizing. Sometimes it seems like certain fans want Will to remain an eternally innocent baby boy, and that tendency extends far beyond this particular topic. The way some people talk about him often feels like they're babying him and honestly, canon Will would absolutely hate that.

Certain fans love blaming Will for the lack of honesty and communication on mike and el's part.
It wasn't Will's fault that El lied to Mike. He had no idea she was lying until they were at Rink-O-Mania and El introduced Angela as her "friend." Will could have exposed El to mike right then and there but he didn't because that's simply not the kind of person Will byers is. Instead, he did the mature thing and confronted El about it directly.
The moment he realized the situation had escalated and that El was in real trouble, he immediately told Mike the truth so they could help her.
I genuinely don't understand why this gets pinned on Will when the issue was always between Mike and El. El didn't feel comfortable being honest with Mike about what she was going through at school, and Mike struggled to communicate his feelings for her properly. Those were their problems to work through, not Will's.
And let's not forget that all of this happened on Will's birthday, and yet he was treated like an afterthought. If Mike and El wanted to spend time just for themselves then they should have just told Will instead of dragging him along with them. Will would have definitely stayed back and respected their privacy if only El or Mike told him too.
I know this discussion has taken place a million times already, but people still misinterpret this scene and paint Will as the villain when, if anything, he was one of the few people actively trying to make things right.
I will always thank season 5 for giving us this friendship
