Most heartbreaking scene in telenovela history??? (Cuna de Lobos, 1986-87)
As some of you know, I’ve been working on an English translation for Cuna de Lobos for the past year and a half. Yes, the project is still on. No, I unfortunately don’t have a release date yet. Thank you for your patience and your interest!!
But anyway, I’ve reached THIS scene (episode 150 in the original airing and in my version, episode 75 in the version on ViX) and I’ve had to stop multiple times because I keep sobbing my eyes out. 😭 And I DO mean sobbing. Loud, ugly sobbing.
Maybe I’m just too close to these characters after living with them for so long, but I’ve never been so wrecked by anything I’ve ever seen in a novela. I have definitely teared up and even cried while translating certain scenes throughout, but this is next level!! Like I can’t fathom anyone who’s watched up to this point reaching this scene and not also breaking down. The dialogue and acting is just so beautiful, poetic and heart-wrenching!! 😭💔 It’s not the campy, over the top, cries in Spanish stuff telenovelas are known for that we all know and love, it’s genuinely devastating and feels so believable. But again, maybe I’m just too close to this story now!
I’d also like to declare Rebecca Jones (RIP) as one of the greatest talents ever to bless the genre. Her performance in this novela is simply astonishing, and I’ve seen her in others where she plays completely different roles and is every bit as convincing. The actress playing the maid Gudelia is perfect too.
Just an incredible scene all around, and I really really hope I can do it justice with my translation!
