Is this a cultural thing that I'm missing on?

Just started my first telenovela (Rubí) and I'm a bit confused about the whole virginity thing? I mean yeah, I understand that the characters are supposed to be younger than their actors, but they're still around 20 y.o., considering that they're all in university. Yet it's still considered a big thing for the girls to lose their virginity? Rubi beat Alejandro up when she learned that he's poor and she almost had sex with him, Maribel wants to wait until marriage, Lorena is pressured by Saul and Rubi's nosy neighbour is constantly trying to catch her in the act (to shame her, I presume). I can understand it coming from Rubi, since she's using her sexuality as a weapon all the time, but it seems to be a recurring theme.

Is waiting until marriage a common thing in Mexico? The characters are always very touchy and loving and look old enough to me that this whole virginity thing really stands out. What am I missing on?

Edit: I also come from a very Christian country but it's not common at all to wait until marriage

Can Soap Operas be Saved?

I’m aspiring to be a movie director and probably also producer and screenwriter, one thing that particularly doesn’t leave my mind despite not me watching any is soap operas. Soap opera is a daytime tv show which basically is for female housewives. Overtime it has died due to various issues:

\- Loss of Attention Span to Newer Generations
\- NOT RAISED to be interested in these types.
\- Reality TV replacing Soaps.
\- Soap Operas cost more to produce

Overall, it fails to attract newer generations, but we also need to blame the people running the shows, as realistically, they should make their shows more “interesting” for their audience. Since the rise of drama, soap opera has just became a ghost of its successor.

So I have this plan that may save them, to attract newer viewers:

  1. No More Daily Episodes, It is too much of a stress to film episodes at the millisecond, and we need to give the actors breaks and more time to work on the episode, and gives enough time for screenwriters to come with better episodes, and improvising in case one mistake happens is probably far more difficult in this scenario as there are possible outcomes as to how the audience will perceive it.
  2. The Plot of the Episodes, sure we must keep it similar to Drama and Reality TV, but we need to think this, what would Gen Z and Alpha and Millineals want to convince them to watch it, following what they want may improve viewership ratings as their wishes have been followed. However, they all have to agree.
  3. Change Premiere Times, Daytime audiences decrease because of unavailability, so it’s better to have it premiere a bit later in the afternoon.

Last Opinion: I’m unsure if this was the wrong subreddit to post this on, however I’m giving advice to various screenwriters who some may plan on working with Soap Operas or currently do. Or if you’re working on a completely new Soap Operas.

My word is final.

[404/Lost Media] Looking for a 2004–2006 episode of "José Luis Sin Censura" (Scripted Infidelity Segment

In English: I’m trying to identify a specific episode of the Spanish-language talk show José Luis Sin Censura that aired between 2004 and 2006, filmed in California, where my parents were actually hired as actors for a scripted segment. The storyline was a staged infidelity/cheating confrontation where my parents played a couple, and a man named Octavio was brought out as the “secret lover” or antagonist. My parents were about 16–17 years old at the time and originally went as audience members before being approached by producers and given a script; they describe the segment as heavily staged with multiple retakes, suggesting it was directed rather than a real confrontation. My dad played the male role, was given a fake name (possibly Octavio), and during the main-stage confrontation a third woman played the wife/partner character who slapped him, which he remembers as painful; that woman was described as heavier-set. My dad is Hispanic, light-skinned, with black hair and a bit chubby, and my mom (Maira/Mayra) has tan skin and short dark-brown hair. Because this was over 20 years ago, some details like names may be production-assigned or inaccurate. The show is also known for having limited or missing archives from that era, making it difficult to track specific episodes. What I’m looking for is any information that could help identify this episode or segment, including episode titles, theme names, tape trade titles (such as common confrontation formats like “Mi pareja me engaña…”), digitized archival clips, private VHS recordings, or collectors who may have saved broadcasts from that time, since official episode records from this period appear to be incomplete or unavailable. Thanks, sorry for any misspellings or mistakes :3

Looking for telenovelas as smart as Yo soy Betty la fea and Café con aroma de mujer

Those two are my all time favorites. I also loved Pasión de Gavilanes, but the first two are on another level. What I loved most about them is that there were no purely evil vs. purely good characters. Every single character had something interesting going on, and even the antagonists’ actions made sense. The writing was just brilliant. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I was hoping you could help me find something similar to my favourite novelas

Most of them are revenge stories or darker soap operas,

I know some people frown upon this genre but, I simply find it way more entertaining than other forms of media, they distract me and cheer me up, even if the stories tend to be dramatic.

I simply laugh at how ridiculous they can be at times and how evil some of these characters can be, how smart, creative and controlled are about their decisions.

Sometimes it's satisfying to watch their downfall, sometimes you empathise with them and how they got there in the first place.

Romance can be a bonus as a sub plot but, not a requirement.

La Usurpadora

Santa Diabla

Más sabe el diablo

Cuna de Lobos

Teresa

Pasion y Poder

Emperatriz

La Impostora

La Doña

Dueños del paraiso

Cameleones

Eva Luna

Amarte es mi Pecado: Arturo

Arturo is such a terrible and weak protagonist. I love Sergio Sendel when he has evil roles. But I have nothing to good to say about him in this novela. What a disappointment. I have to say that Nora and Paulina really did a good job, although both got on my nerves.

He used women and hides behind the fact that "he doesn't lie".

Historical recommendations

Ive only just started getting into telenovelas and I love the historical ones (although I just love a historical setting in general), are there any particularly good ones set at an older time? I don’t mind any specific period.

Looking for some specific recommendations

As much as I love novelas like Teresa, Santa Diabla, The Usurper and any sort of revenge stories, I want to find something more simple, romantic and sweet.

Could you recommend any?

Would it be too much to ask for or too hard to find a telenovela that is mostly wholesome and sweet, despite how dramatic they tend to be?

LQLVMR is not that good…

I just finished lqlvmr (even though it took me weeks to finish cause it was boring at some parts) and can’t help but think that the story is just so…ass.

The whole mess and tragedy (especially near the end) is all because Pedro lost his balls. Which I understand messed him up but…to then know that it wasn’t even Alejandros fault but his fathers…and Pedro still being like “well u still have to pay for what your father did” like huh? It just makes no sense at all.

But it is a telenovela so I guess it follows telenovela logic.

Everyone was lwk just annoying and stupid. I was expecting so much from this one cause it is insanely popular but the story let me down. Though I admit, the emotional parts were definitely emotional (i cried a few times) and the dramatic plot twists were definitely there (i was gagged at the last minutes of the last ep).
