Kindle Fetch - forked for KOReader - update v0.5 - 4x faster searching

Download + installation instructions (Github)

Yay compression! Searches are much faster, and no longer freeze KOReader. Library Genesis now sends results compressed, about 29 kB a page instead of 267 kB. A page that takes 13–29 seconds to arrive in v0.4 now takes 3–6 seconds (about 4x faster!). Searches run in the background, so KOReader stays usable while you wait, and you can tap the "Searching…" message to cancel.

Downloads

  • Asks before replacing a book you already have, or lets you open the one that's there
  • Books download to a .part file, so half-finished books never show up in your library
  • Stalled downloads give up instead of hanging forever
  • New Downloads menu entry to bring back a download you hid
  • Clearer messages when Library Genesis is overloaded or a download fails

Search results

  • Shows what you searched for and how many books were found
  • Load more keeps your place instead of jumping back to page 1
  • Press Enter on the keyboard to search
  • Covers for the next page load ahead of time

Settings and other polish

  • Settings change in place, without flashing the screen or jumping back to the first page
  • New Clear Cache option
  • Errors stay on screen until you dismiss them, instead of vanishing after 2 seconds
  • Update checks happen in the background, at most once a day, and won't re-offer a version you declined
  • Lots of smaller speed-ups and fixes (fewer settings writes, less screen flashing, cleanup of old files)

Kindle Fetch - forked for KOReader - update v0.4 - FIXES ANNA'S ARCHIVE BLOCK

Download + installation instructions (Github)

Sorry for the long gap between updates, I've just started a new job. Also was super annoying to switch to Library Genesis after Anna's Archive started blocking bots (understandable security change however).

- Search and downloads now use Library Genesis: Anna's Archive added bot detection, which is why searches started showing "No books found" (reported by u/Nvno23 and tonimbl on Github). Kindle Fetch now searches and downloads entirely from Library Genesis - pros are the cover images and search results generally download quicker, plus i only have to scrape one wikipedia page now for updated mirrors, but con the search accuracy has been degraded somewhat.

- Android users: in-app updates won't work for the existing v0.3 version - please download the release from Github and install it manually. They have been fixed and will work fine after v0.4.

- Faster search results: covers now download in the background, with placeholders until they arrive, so results show straight away. Cover images also only download the small thumbnail versions by default, but you can also tap a cover in the download prompt to see it at full resolution

- Wi-Fi: turns on Wi-Fi when it's needed, and saved search results still show when you're offline (suggested by u/ReaLx3m)

- Gesture shortcut: open Kindle Fetch from a gesture, under Kindle Fetch in KOReader's gesture manager (suggested by u/ReaLx3m and u/Ill-Abroad2799)

- Easier to read: book details in search results are black instead of light gray, and the download prompt is laid out more clearly (suggested by u/ReaLx3m)

- Quiet update checks: no more update prompts out of nowhere. Checks only run when Wi-Fi is on, can be turned off in settings, and can be run from the menu (reported by Darthagnon on Github)

- Background downloads: hide a download and tap the book again to see its progress. Downloads are cancelled when KOReader is closed.

- Plus lots of bug fixes, and a big set of automated tests for consistency between versions!

If v0.3 crashed or didn't work on your device (e.g. Kobo), please give v0.4 a try - if it's still broken, open an issue on Github with your crash.log attached. I wanna get this in a stable state...

Kindle Fetch - forked for KOReader - update v0.3

Download + installation instructions (Github)

UX upgrades all around thanks to community feedback!

  • Automatic plugin updating: checks latest release version on Github, and prompts the user for an update with patch note information (suggested by kelmi3D)
  • Show book covers in search: optionally show book covers alongside books in search results. Better formatted book information using a custom menu (suggested by 2211mg). Note that parallel book cover downloads can be hit or miss on older Kindles so there is a toggle for it in settings.
  • Tap book cover to expand to full screen (suggested by IbnRami)
  • Simplify download prompt: only have path + download buttons, and tap outside to close (suggested by IbnRami)
  • Extend search caches: search caches now expire after 2 weeks and have max 1000 entries
  • Prompt updates: plugin and curl updates will prompt the user first rather than being triggered automatically

Kindle Fetch - forked for KOReader - update v0.2

Download + installation instructions (Github)

Big update! Added:

  • Book download previews with cover image + button to choose download location
  • Background downloads (allows multiple downloads at once, just hide the download progress widget)
  • User preferences for default download location, languages, file types and book types
  • Search caching
  • Automatic url scraping from wikipedia (to ensure urls are always up to date)
  • Automatic curl updates (this was the main cause of people's searches not working in the original Kindle Fetch + the v0.1 version of this plugin. see https://github.com/justrals/KindleFetch/issues/40#issuecomment-4009774337 for the fix I translated over + the reason behind curl needing be updated)
  • Fixed UI menu not displaying properly on some kindles (by spamming repaints for entire screen rather than per element)

Kindle Fetch - forked for KOReader

I got sick of having to exit all the way out of KOReader, launch KUAL, launch Kindle Fetch and then use the CLI everytime I wanted to download a book on my new kindle, so I just forked Kindle Fetch into a plugin! It simply launches from the tools tab in KOReader and it makes it way easier to grab new books. Just search for a book, tap the one you want; wait for it to download. Books are searched through Anna's Archive and downloaded from Library Genesis.

Some caveats:

  • I opted to only use Library Genesis for downloads as Z-Library seemed like a pain to deal with and never worked properly for me anyway on the original version.
  • I haven't created any menus for user settings, so in the meantime for efficiency I defaulted searches to English-only (yes, this probably the next thing to implement).
  • I haven't figured out how to keep the Kindle awake while waiting for a book to download, so the Kindle may fall asleep before larger books can finish downloading.
  • Finally - this is less of a fork as it is a top-down rewrite from a cli sh script into a lua project. I kind of learnt lua as I went with this one, so create issues/pull requests if something is broken or you just have an idea in how something can be done better.
