Dating
I'm a non-Kyrgyz guy currently dating a Kyrgyz woman, and I'm trying to better understand some of the cultural expectations around traditional relationships in Kyrgyzstan.
From the beginning, she told me that she considers herself traditional and doesn't believe in splitting dating expenses 50/50. I'm completely comfortable paying when we go out, so that's not really the issue for me.
What I'm having trouble understanding is what the traditional role looks like on both sides. In our relationship, I feel that I'm taking on the financial side of the traditional arrangement, but I don't see many of the other forms of reciprocity that I would associate with a traditional relationship—things like cooking for your partner, inviting them over for a meal, or occasionally doing a small thoughtful gesture such as buying them a coffee or their favorite snack.
I've been reading older discussions about relationships and dating involving Kyrgyzstan, and I've noticed that some people describe a similar dynamic where the man is expected to provide but may not necessarily receive the same kind of gestures in return. Some men have even described feeling unappreciated or used.
For men who have also felt like the relationship was one-sided, how did you deal with it? Did things get better as the relationship progressed, or is this pretty much the best it ever gets?
