Phandelver as HBO’s Deadwood
I have been reimagining Phandelver as HBO’s Deadwood. None of my players have ever seen it as they are younger, so they don’t realize what I am doing.
We did the initial sessions from the original starter set and when they finished, I decided to allow a year to pass to do some downtime.
In that time I had a new proprietor came in to take over the sleeping Giant and he just started calling it “The Giant”. He was a half orc named Algronknatnin but they just call him ”Al”. He started gambling and prostitution.
He has a weasley assistant who helps run the bar that is one of the players brother-in-law‘s that he hates who’s married to his sister.
Halia has taken over the role of George Hearst and stole the forge of spells from Gundren through bribes and paperwork.
I love the rough and tumble feeling of that deadwood town in DND. My favorite part so far is the players knew that Al would do almost anything to make money but now they’re realizing that he’s still aligned with the town and when push comes to shove he will lean in their direction where they thought he was completely a villain up till now.
Anybody had any kind of experience like this?
