Why would this northern pike be colored this way?

Approximately 12-14 inch long northern pike caught in NW Minnesota, USA. What would cause a discoloration along the front left half of the fish?

I have seen walleye with bifurcated-coloring when on a guided fishing trip in Ontario last summer. The guides said it is relatively common when a population from a different lake (usually one with much different camouflage requirements) mates with a population in the local lake? Would this be a similar situation?
