Aurora Player - v0.2.19 - come try it if you'd like!

Hey all,

A while back I posted here about Aurora Player, an Android player I've been building as a personal project. Quite a lot has changed since then, so I wanted to give it a proper update rather than just bumping the old thread.

I'm now using it as my own daily player, so it's well past the "rough prototype" stage.

What's new since the last post:

  • A proper phone and tablet experience: a redesigned portrait UI with a cinematic layout, not just the TV screens stretched onto a phone
  • Cross-provider search: search across all your playlists at once, with duplicates merged and a source picker
  • Combined favourites: your favourites from every provider show up together in one place
  • Smarter buffering: an Auto mode that learns from each provider and adapts to reduce stalls
  • Auto frame rate matching: switches the display to match the stream where the device supports it, for smoother motion
  • Lots of stability, navigation and playback fixes off the back of tester feedback

Current feature list:

  • Xtream Codes and M3U support
  • Multi-provider support
  • Live TV with full EPG
  • Movies and TV shows in poster grids
  • Favourites (now combined across providers) and recently watched
  • Cross-provider search
  • Offline VOD downloads
  • Parental controls
  • Continue watching & autoplay
  • Picture in picture
  • Subtitle styling
  • Multi-stream / multiview
  • Trakt and Simkl scrobbling
  • Encrypted local backup and restore
  • ExoPlayer built in, with optional external player support
  • Channel/category hiding, sorting and management
  • Channel list caching
  • Adaptive "Auto" buffering and auto frame rate matching
  • Dark or light UI with accent colour customisation, as well as time of day switching of themes.
  • D-pad navigation, tested mainly on Nvidia Shield, plus phone/tablet touch layouts
  • In-app issue reporting (not really a feature, but very helpful for me if you encounter issues :-))

Just to be clear on the money side: everything you see in the app is free, and the core player will always stay free. The only paid option will be "Aurora Extra" — an optional add-on for website-based management and syncing your setup between the app and the website. It's still in very early development, so there's nothing to buy and nothing locked away.

It's still a work in progress, and that's exactly why I'd love more people to have a play around with it across different Android TV boxes, phones, tablets, remotes, providers, stream formats and general setups. The more variety, the better I can smooth the edges.

How to install:

Aurora is a direct download (sideload) from my website. It's not on the Play Store anymore:

https://auroraiptv.app/

You'll need to allow installs from unknown sources on your device the first time. The app checks the website for updates, so once it's installed you'll be prompted when a new build is available.

Cheers.

Aurora IPTV Player update - now on Google Play for closed testing

Hey all,

I posted here recently about Aurora IPTV, an Android TV IPTV player I’ve been building as a personal project.

Since that post, quite a bit has changed. The app has had a fair bit of feedback, a bunch of fixes, and a few more features added. It’s now also available on Google Play in closed testing, which is the next step before I can hopefully make it more widely available.

Aurora is still a player only. It does not provide any channels, playlists, streams, subscriptions, or media content. You need your own legal M3U/Xtream provider details.

Current features include:

  • Xtream Codes and M3U support
  • Multi-provider support
  • Live TV and full EPG
  • Movies and TV shows in poster grids
  • Favourites and recently watched
  • Multi-stream / multiview
  • Trakt and Simkl scrobbling
  • Encrypted local backup and restore
  • ExoPlayer built in, with optional external player support
  • Channel/category hiding, sorting, and management
  • Channel list caching
  • Dark UI and accent colour customisation
  • D-pad navigation, tested mainly on Nvidia Shield

It’s still a work in progress, but it’s now at the point where I’m using it myself as my daily player. I’d really appreciate more testers across different Android TV devices, phones, tablets, remotes, providers, stream formats, and general setups.

If anyone wants to help test through Google Play:

Firstly, please join the Google Group: https://groups.google.com/g/aurora-iptv-player/

Secondly, join the closed test here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/app.auroraiptv

After joining, install it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.auroraiptv

Make sure you use the same Google account for all links.

Hey all,

I’ve been building an Android TV IPTV app called Aurora IPTV and it’s ready for some testing.

It’s a player only (no content provided). Right now it supports Xtream Codes + M3U.

Features so far:

Live TV + EPG. Movies & shows (VOD). Clean, remote-friendly UI. Inbuilt updating tool. Manage your favourites and sorting of categories and channels inside the app. Multi-provider support now also added.

Still polishing things like navigation and overall smoothness.

If anyone wants to try it on Shield / Firestick / Android TV, I’d really appreciate some feedback. Lots of features still to come.

Feel free to help future the shape of the app!
