Old house + old bathroom + my first real remodel and could use some advice

Hi r/renovations, I have an old house, an outdated bathroom and very little idea what might be hiding behind the walls, so naturally I’m here asking the internet for help lol.

I’m basically gearing up for a full bathroom remodel. The bathroom hasn’t been updated by the previous owner (and I’m pretty sure the owner before it). Everything works technically but it’s very much time.

So ergo we’ve been talking with a local remodeling firm here in OC. I like the idea of going with a remodel company specifically because I’m pretty sure the project/pricing gets worked out upfront and they handle most of the coordination. I really don’t want to become the unpaid project manager of five different subcontractors lol.

My main concern is that this is an old house and the bathroom hasn’t been touched in a LONG time.

So yes, I’d love advice from people here who’ve remodeled older bathrooms. What should I be considering when choosing between contractors?

This is my first major renovation on my own, so I’m mostly trying to figure out what can realistically be checked beforehand and what you just have to accept as an unknown until demo. What I need to ask vs what they’ll handle. Things like that.

Any old-house bathroom wisdom is appreciated! Thanks

We love our neighborhood, but our house just doesn’t work for us anymore, should we remodel or move?

Hi everyone, we’re in Mission Viejo and genuinely love the neighborhood. I’ve never been someone who was super close with neighbors, but somehow that just happened here. We know people, feel safe, like the area, etc. and the idea of starting over somewhere else feels like a huge hassle.

At the same time, the layout of our actual house is starting to bother us more and more and we need more from the space.

So we’ve been looking at both options. We’ve talked with a few local remodelers in OC like PPL Fam, Sea Pointe etc about what remodeling could look like while we’re figuring out what makes sense. Moving right now is expensive too once you factor in selling, buying again, moving, probably fixing things in the new house anyway, and so on…. That said, a renovation is also a big commitment and what if something goes wrong?

I’m curious if anyone here has gone or is going through the same thing and if you decided to pack up and move or is it worth it to stay and do a huge renovation? I really love our area and need all the advice I can get.
