Starting solids at 5 months or waiting until 6?

My baby just turned 5 months and he is SO interested in food. He’s 19 pounds, and he can sit up if he’s supported but not really independently (he leans over after 5-10 seconds). But he seems fine in a high chair.

I know the AAP says 6 months and that seems to be the granola recommendation, but my instinct is that he’s ready developmentally to start gnawing on some strips of steak and other BLW stuff. I’m not feeling like he really needs purées, but I’m not opposed to them, and he seems ready to try anything. He gets soooo excited when I eat and frustrated that I won’t share (he tries so hard to intercept me, leans over with a wide open mouth, wants to get in on the action). What would you do, what did you do?

Feed to sleep bedtime routine

Do you feed your baby to sleep and also have a wind-down routine that includes books and/or massage? Can you please share?

My baby is almost 5 months old and has always fallen asleep on the boob or bottle. At bedtime/naptime, he is both hungry and tired, so his patience for books, massage, cozy wind-down stuff is thin. By the time I bring him into his room to get him into jammies, he’s crying. So I skip books and just rush to feed him. He usually does then go to sleep pretty easily.

As he gets older, I’d love to have a slower paced routine that includes reading, singing, etc. Tonight, I tried feeding him first with the light on, and then giving him a massage and reading books. He loved it, but when it was time to sleep, he was extremely hard to settle. I think maybe his tummy was already full and he was uncomfortable/frustrated that he couldn’t nurse without more milk coming out? He cried hard and only fell asleep after 30+ min of rocking and bouncing.

Advice welcome!
