I really love the difference between the Demogorgon in 1 and the Demo's in later seasons!

The Demogorgon is a core staple of the show, and personally, i feel like introducing more humanoid lifeforms would've made things... a bit too fantasy feeling. I think keeping it to one single main humanoid species is an important part of what made this show work so well, and it's clear the writer's all agree (that said i love the Demobats, and the Vine's technically count as a lifeform/entity ;D).

But that decision raises an issue - keeping it interesting. Season 2 did this wonderfully - Demodogs!

Not only is there a narrative purpose to the Demodogs (to prevent spamming adult Demos and ruining the impact of the S1 Demo), there's a in-universe purpose. They're at a developmental stage where they're quadrupedal, faster, work in packs, and are far better for guarding and clearing rooms/small areas as opposed to doing physical work and completing objectives or acting as pure brute force like an adult Demo would. They're also seemingly in a sort of limbo where they're permanently stuck as Juveniles - likely due to the Particles nesting inside of them being able to directly enhance or change their bodies - especially seeing as Billy/The Flayed were far, far stronger than they naturally would be and could survive things no normal human can. I'd imagine MF particles could prevent a host from aging as well.

4 touches on the Demo's in a cool way as well that also sets up 5's use of Demo's in a way. The captive Demo in Russia is completely disconnected from the Hivemind, but it's nothing like the Season 1 Demo - It's a strong, brutal, agile entity EASILY able to kill multiple armed people and that's specifically because it's both captive, but also being trained for use in combat. This shows us that, when trained for it, Demogorgon's can be more than the slow methodical predator the Season 1 Demogorgon was - they can be agile, strong, and great at killing.

And that sets up 5 in an awesome way. The Demogorgon's in 5 are specifically designed for killing - Vecna's plan was to smash The Abyss into our world, and that'd require force, in our dimension specifically.

The Season 1 Demo's overall operational objective was to establish infrastructure in the Upside Down (the nest in the library), breach out into our world and look for potential victims for Vecna, and bring them back to him. That's it. It wasn't meant to kill - it was born in The Abyss under natural circumstances and was chilling feeding on an egg when it was transported into the Upside Down upon it's creation - and it was allowed to feed and hunt when it wasn't needed. But the Demo's in 5 are different. They were born specifically to kill. They were very likely physically manipulated by the particles inside of them to be stronger than they naturally are like The Flayed.

The S1 Demo was essentially a natural born predator used as a drone whereas the Demo's in 5 were soldiers born to slash and gash. That's how i'd sum it up lol ;D

I love how the Demo's feel cool, unique, and fresh in each season they're in. And i also love how it's written in a way where the S5 Demo's can be fast, agile, and strong without erasing the S1 Demo being slow and methodical. S5 Demo's were born and deployed to kill, the S1 Demo was a natural predator born in The Abyss under natural circumstance. They both make sense at the same time!

Here's another small thing i love: how the Demo's, despite Hivemind manipulation, sometimes still act as they do naturally. Specifically the S5 Demo that went up against Karen. It acted very similarly to the S1 Demo - slow, calculated, intimidating. It didn't run around and throw her to the side to immediately get to Holly. The S4 Demo did the same at times - they love to slowly walk over and tower over their victims even when they can get a good shot in. They're predators, they want to feel big, even when they have a objective to complete.

Honestly, I've come to really like the design of Dimension X/The Abyss !!

Specifically in S5. I love it's "scorched sky", the clouds, and god... the lightning. I am a sucker of lightning and The Abyss perfectly nails it - distant flashes within the clouds specifically.

Long yappy breakdown ahead:

Something i LOVE about The Abyss is it's familiar-yet-alien terrain. It adds a special sense of wrongness due to it's familiarity. Mars, Titan, and Venus all invoke that same feeling in me. So different and alien, but so, so scarily familiar. Specifically, where the Pain Tree is located in The Abyss looks like especially familiar; just like Nevada. I don't know if that's intentional or just a cool coincidence, but it's cool regardless.

Now..

The way i view it, The Abyss (and the Upside Down) are both a reflection of the raw, brutal processes of life - that's why EVERY inter-dimensional aspect (Gates, the Vines, the inter-dimensional membrane, the Wall of the Upside Down, etc) are all so distinctively grotesque and alive. They all specifically resemble the inner workings of our bodies; our organs, flesh, etc. It's life, species, humanity, but without the intricacy, agency or specialty that makes Earth-life beautiful. Independence, agency, free-thinking, autonomy, fashion, society, music, love - you get the gist. None of it exists in Dimension X - It is all stolen from you. That's what makes it a barren, harsh wasteland.

The dimension/planet (if the landscape we see is just a planet in a universe akin to ours) itself is, essentially, one giant body. Consuming and growing. The Mind Flayer is the brain and everything else it connects to it's Hivemind is it's Body. That's why it desires to grow and spread.

It seems like everything beyond our dimension is similar to The Abyss - brutal, raw, and unapologetic life. The Hellscape, the Upside Down, The Abyss; they all share that similarity that they're so horrifically unforgiving and raw.

But our dimension, the Rightside Up, and our planet both defy that inter-dimensional formula everything else seems to follow of being brutal and raw. Earth is full of life and love. So many different species (and people) that are beautiful because they are different, so many unique ecosystems, biomes, climates, all localized on Earth.

That's what makes The Abyss so cool - It's life without the love or autonomy that makes Earth so beautiful. They're one of the same, but with that one detail changed; in one you're free and independent, in the other your autonomy and individuality is forcefully stolen from you to aid a singular 'ruler' that wants you to serve as it's Body to control and spread.

I know it's a bit of a controversial design because people think "If cold why sunny desert????" but... I mean, if that's really the limit of your thinking and all you can conjure up, i don't think the design is the problem lol.

Mars is a sandy desert VERY reminiscent to those on Earth and yet it's cold. Saturn's moon Titan is similar; sandy, rocky desert but has a thick, hazy atmosphere and is freezing.

I also love the Pain Tree. There's something about gigantic, 'alive' structures that are just so cool. Subnautica 2 has something similar and i get so giddy thinking about it lmfao.

I'm sorry if i repeat myself a bit in this post lol

I love phasmo and hold it so dear to my heart but oh my god the animations are just... terrible 😭

I love jank. You love jank. Jank is what made the earlier playermodels so loved! But these animations are not janky, they are objectively and eye-hurtingly bad in a way that takes AWAY from the preexisting jank rather than adding to it by making everything look less like genuine human jank and a looot more like inexperience mixed with higher-up laziness. They've made TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS off of Phasmo and... can't hire a single well equipped animator that can make a simple yet logical animation.

This is seriously insanely disappointing and i doubt i'll be playing the game until they fix this. Because yes, it DOES take away from the experience.. by a lot.

I feel bad for the poor person whose work is being blasted (by me included) but this is beyond them; I'm not disappointed at them specifically, not at all, but that kinetic completely cheaped out (despite having made tens of millions of dollars, mind you) and hired somebody clearly not fit for the job and then APPROVED these animations for release (which is tomorrow).

It is insanely disappointing how horribly scummy all of these companies are and how they're allowed to get away with it. First it was Void Interactive with Ready or Not, now it's Kinetic with Phasmo. Awesome.

Trying this again! I posted this a few months back and didn't get many comments.

Preferably mythology based - but i'd like to take a go at any question, honestly ;D

I'm a firm believer in having the viewer rationalize things themself; as in leave clues and make sure things make sense when put together and are properly set up, but not directly told to you and require additional thinking and rationalization. This show is exactly that! That doesn't mean they're plotholes, they just require you to put the dots together. ESPECIALLY things that are not shown to the characters (whom we see through the lens of).
