At 5'4" with a reported US size 7 shoe, Rowan Blanchard has never needed towering height to make footwear the most interesting part of a look.

One of my favorites is still her yellow satin Prada mules from the 2019 Euphoria premiere—the tiny bows look almost delicate until you notice those sharply angled sculptural heels. Then there are the deliberately mismatched Calvin Klein sandals and the wildly colorful Gucci sequined heels.

Christina Milian didn’t use transparent heels as a neutral. At Fashion Nova Presents: Party with Cardi in 2019, she matched her neon-orange ruched dress with PrettyLittleThing mules featuring clear straps, pointed orange toes, and chunky block heels.

Cara Delevingne’s shoes almost disappeared beneath her floor-length David Koma Resort 2020 gown at the 2019 Carnival Row premiere in Berlin — but look closely and you can catch flashes of metallic platform heels beneath the sequins.

The shoe brand was never publicly confirmed, so we’re not guessing. Instead, we looked at how the platforms continued the silver-and-chrome palette of the gown, plus Cara’s history of wearing metallic shoes from Alejandro Ingelmo, Alejandra G, and Jimmy Choo.

There’s something satisfying about an outfit that knows when to stop. Ana de Armas let her Etro paisley flares do all the talking, then grounded them with simple white Saint Laurent Andy sneakers.

The December 2020 Santa Monica look also included a Current/Elliott tee, Western-inspired Versace belt, Dior St. Honoré tote, and Cartier jewelry. But the Andy sneakers are what make the combination feel so wearable — and they became a recurring part of Ana’s off-duty wardrobe that year.

Lucy Hale’s wardrobe tells two very different shoe stories here. In Los Angeles, she kept things practical for dog walks and errands in Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 36 and Joyride Run Flyknit sneakers. Emily Ratajkowski’s 2020 dog walks with Colombo are a surprisingly good lesson in what sneakers can do to an outfit.

She wore black athletic sneakers with a Givenchy blazer and loose trousers, white Veja Esplars with head-to-toe cream tailoring, and classic Nike Air Force 1s with a bright red puffer and jeans. Freida Pinto’s December 2015 appearance at the Audemars Piguet Rodeo Drive boutique opening is worth another look from the feet up.

Her Cushnie Et Ochs Resort 2016 separates kept the palette completely black, but the Charlotte Olympia Octavia sandals introduced the detail: suede cage straps inspired by the designer’s spider-web motif, sheer mesh, double ankle straps, a metallic island platform, and a towering stiletto.

The Octavia has since disappeared from primary retail, making Pinto’s photos a great record of one of Charlotte Olympia’s most recognizable platform designs.

Before Emily in Paris became synonymous with fearless fashion, Lily Collins was already filming in Paris in one of Emily Cooper’s defining early looks. The yellow Ganni co-ord is hard to miss, but look down: those black heels are Aquazzura “Whisper Crystal” sandals, finished with crystal-lined soles and gold square buckles.
