50k Training: Longer long runs vs spreading out mileage?

Training for first 50k in early Nov. I have a rough plan based on modifying/combining plans I found online. My plan peaks at 42 MPW with a long run of 18 miles (running 5x / week). That equates to 43% of my mileage that week. Is that a bad idea? I'm trying to reconcile the following three pieces of "conventional wisdom" that don't seem to mesh:

  1. You only need ~30 MPW to finish a 50k
  2. You should try to have at least one long run in the 18-20 mile range
  3. Your long runs shouldn't be more than 30% of your weekly mileage

I could reduce my long runs and add miles to my other runs to keep the same weekly mileages, but am I going to be in trouble if my longest training run is ~14 miles?

David Roche's Beginner 50k plan?

I'm currently running 30 MPW (trails) and planning to run my first 50k in November. Does anyone have experience using (or general thoughts on) this plan?

Likes:

  • 5 days per week (what I'm currently doing)
  • Relatively low weekly mileage (peaks at 45 MPW)
  • Running day after long run, to get experience running on tired legs

Things I'm unsure about:

  • Focus seems to be on short/fast intervals as opposed to tempo/threshold runs
  • Does the taper look OK?

Thank you in advance!
