I have a Playstation edge controller, and full transitioned to my steam controller. Found out the case the for the edge fits the steam controller perfectly, and it's my go to for when I travel
I have a Steam Deck, and I have messed around with using it as a docked media/gaming box before. With the Steam Machine, though, I am wondering if it could be worth putting real time into making it the main device on my living-room TV.
I know this is not a direct Shield Pro comparison. I also know the price difference is 'yuge'. I am not asking whether the Steam Machine is a better value or better hardware. I am asking whether SteamOS can realistically become the main living-room frontend for games and media without turning into a permanent Linux-project hobby. My goal is simple: turn on the TV, wake the Steam Machine through HDMI-CEC, and have that be the device I use for almost everything. Here's things I expect to be straightforward/no worries about:
Things I want to solve/have concerns about setting up in an acceptable way:
The part I am having trouble finding real information about is media playback quality on SteamOS. My Shield Pro has spoiled me with its AI Upscaling. I know it is not magic, but it does a surprisingly good job making lower-resolution content look better on a 4K TV. On Windows, I have also used video/audio enhancement options through my GPU and players. I have not found an equivalent SteamOS setup that feels simple, reliable, and usable from the couch. I understand that AMD FSR/RSR and SteamOS/Gamescope upscaling are mostly gaming features. What I am trying to find out is whether there is a practical Linux/SteamOS solution for local media playback. For example:
I am also trying to understand the current state of these areas on SteamOS:
I am fine with some setup work. I am not looking for a perfect all-in-one solution if one doesn't exist. I mostly want to know whether people have already landed on a stable SteamOS HTPC stack that covers games, emulation, personal media, IPTV, and general streaming without constantly dropping back into Desktop Mode.
End of the day I'm just trying to bide my time until I finally get my own Steam Machine to start tinkering, but figured I could start working through some of these on my Steam Deck to make it a mobile HTPC powerhouse
He absolutely loves these baskets at Target, constantly crying until we finally let go play 'baskets' with him. This is the current evolution of what baskets entails...
