The door creaked, and he opened his eyes. She had removed her wizarding things and dressed in casual Muggle clothes. Her feet were bare, her hair piled atop her head in a bushy riot of shining curls. She was the antithesis of everything that he had ever thought Spinner’s End could be, a blazing act of joyful rebellion that he hoped resonated as far as whatever world his miserable family were suffering in now, and made them spit.

“Don't leave me,” she cried suddenly,  tightening her grip on him again as the golden glow receded. At first he thought she was addressing the magical, glowing thing which had suffused them, but he knew suddenly, though he could not say how, that it was him she meant. 

>“Never, Hermione,” and he heard the same near-desperation in his own voice as he had heard in hers. Almost feverishly, he cupped her face in his hands and met her eyes again, willing with all his might that she would see the truth and meaning in his words, understand him as he had understood her. “I swear it.” 

>He sealed the promise with a kiss in the center of her forehead.

>“I swear it,” he said again, and the words glowed inside of him like firelight.
