Temporary surface attachment

I'm in the final stages of a workbench, and I want to put a sacrificial surface on the top, possibly some sort of hardboard or something. I want it to be attached really solid, but I want it to be removable when it inevitably gets ruined. Anyone have suggestions? I was reading about using double-sided tape, but I'm not sure if there's a particular kind that I should use. It would be attached to the other side of whatever laminate I use, to medium rough plywood. TIA!

I was in town for one day and your city reminds me of the paintings of John Register

ELI5 Why did long distance phone calls used to cost more?

In the 90's when I was stationed in S. Korea, once a month I would get one grainy fifteen minute "morale phone call" home. A buddy of mine moved to Seoul and last month he and I spent an hour video-chatting as he wandered around his neighborhood. A big part of early hacker culture was figuring out how to get free long-distance phone calls to exotic places like "Duluth" and "San Bernardino", now my wife can chat with her mother in Europe for three hours and not even think twice about it.

I know, now it's all over the internet, but the internet is pretty much just wires, same as the transatlantic cable. Why did it used cost more to call outside of your area code? Were they all just electrical signals across wires? Was there some extra work that went into calling from Kansas to Oklahoma? Or was it, like most things, that they charged us as long as they could until some technology came along and made it no longer feasible?

Does anyone have any recommendations for mold removal agencies?

We know we have mold in our attic but we haven't had the necessary time or "political will" to deal with it until now. We had Rainbow Restoration out originally, but now they haven't responded to my requests for a follow-up appointment. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Where can I find anemones and/or ranunculus bouquets?

My wife has just informed me that the tulips I typically buy her for Mother's Day aren't cutting it and she prefers anemones and ranunculus. Some online searches mostly bring up online deliveries, whereas I'm hoping to find an actual florist that carries these, today. Any recommendations?

What is life like in a Portuguese small town?

I am writing a short novel, and in one chapter the main character goes to visit the hometown of his estranged Portuguese father. I want to try to capture the vibe of small town life as well as I can. I have never been to Portugal myself, but I lived in a small town in Italy for a few years and I'm wondering how similar it is to that.

If you have any stories you'd like to share, or if you can recommend any books that are set in small towns in Portugal, I'd love to hear about them. Thanks!
