Digital Key Won't Start Car

2025 i4. My digital key is working fine to unlock/lock the doors when I hold it up to the door. When I put my iphone in the holder in the car, and turn on the car it goes on for maybe 2 seconds and then shuts off.

I have the digital key in my iphone wallet and I leave the phone open to the wallet when I place it in the holder.

I haven't used it since I set it up last year, but had the need today and it was an epic fail.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

First road trip

Just did my first road trip that required charging along the way. 750ish miles round trip from San Diego to Paso Robles for a concert and a bit of wine tasting. Here are some of my observations, in no particular order, and I'd be curious if they match others:

  • The car is a joy to drive on the roads. Both freeway and especially the backroads in the wine country. My wife was not as thrilled with the spirited driving, but I had a blast.
  • Ran Eco pretty much the entire trip and did 3.5 mi/kwh. Thought it might have been more, but given freeway speeds of 75+ most of the way, other than stop/go traffic in parts of LA, I don't think I did too bad.
  • Glad I got the adapter for Tesla. Wasn't sure I wanted to spring for it, given that I normally charge at home, but at least here in California, the BMW mapping app seemed to really favor Tesla as they certainly seem to be everywhere. Not sure when I'll use it again, but glad I've got it.
  • The BMW mapping software worked well. I liked that the display shows the total trip, but also the distance to charging waypoints along the way. I had set it to find chargers when I was around 20% for safety, but given the number of chargers around, I probably could have gone lower. Also, it seemed pretty good at refiguring where I needed to stop when I took some side excursions that changed its original stop.
  • As a test, I had hooked up the eSim hoping for better reception and the ability for my wife to stream stuff while we drove, but it honestly didn't work that well. I'll be getting rid of it before it renews next month.
  • It was over 90 degrees up in Paso and the Eco mode seemed to struggle keeping the cabin cool, but switching to normal mode corrected it pretty quickly.
  • Started at 100% at home and only needed to charge once on the way up which worked great. The way back, I charged at a nearby station to 80%, then went out in the wine country so I needed to charge twice on the way back. Worked well, but added the better part of an hour to the trip if I include the initial charging after we left the hotel.

Bottomline is that everything went really well. I think if I were taking a much longer trip, the 20ish minute stops along the way would start to add up, but if I wasn't in a hurry to get somewhere it's probably not a showstopper.

Let me know if this matches your experience.

Just spent well over an hour with Tmobile and Bmw trying to activate the eSim. All I wanted to do was try it as I'm going on a long trip and wanted my wife to hook up her phone/ipad without tethering to a phone.

Everytime the BMW app took me to the Tmobile site to activate, I got a website error. Tmobile, after much complaining, got BMW on the line and between the three of us we determined it was on Tmobile's side, which is what I told Tmobile from the start.

Regardless, very long story short, after finally getting to a 2nd level Tmobile tech, changing my iphone default browser from Chrome to Safari solved the issue and I was able to activate without any problems.

Like I said, not sure I will use it after this trip, but wanted to pass on the cure if anyone else was having a problem signing up.

Thanks.

I've had my 2025 eDrive 40 to 8 months or so and since I'm now in the routine of driving the car and not just joy riding, I decided to look at the stats for the last couple of months. I live in San Diego so weather isn't really a concern. My average consumption for March and April was about the same which was 3.4 mi/kWh. The app told me that I'm worse than 77% of drivers, but can't understand why.

I used Eco for 100% of the month, drive 60 miles roundtrip to work 2 days a week and shorter trips, less than 20 miles the rest of the time. A lot of my work commute is in traffic, and I'm letting the car's adaptive capability control the braking, especially on my commute, and I'm making sure I don't accelerate hard.

So, what more could I be doing to get better numbers, or are these numbers really not that bad? Unfortunately while the app is great at criticizing me, it's not so great at coaching me up to be better.

I noticed this today when I was parking that the display showed 164ft. There was definitely not 164ft behind me as there was a curb probably 25 feet behind me. Maybe it wasn't seeing the curb? Can anyone tell me what this means?
