What prevents pharmaceutical companies from making up data?

Pharmaceutical companies almost have a monopoly on their research. You need to be a doctor to study the drugs.

What mechanisms are in place to prevent pharmaceutical companies from just completely making up their data? Are we dependent on whistleblowers? There have been numerous whistleblowers over the years, not specifically about faked data, but related topics of research bias and lack of scientific controls.

Other than simply making up the data, here are a few things that allows the research to make medications appear effective, when they actually are not:

  1. Active placebo effect. Because the drugs are so powerful in changing a person's behavior, researchers and participants are able to tell which drugs are placebos, and which drugs are active, despite blinding of trials.

  2. Selection bias. Researchers only allow the most severely mentally ill people to be participants in the research.

  3. The game theory perspective. Many patients report being victims of organized crime, or that they have spiritual or demonic presence, which causes their symptoms. It is possible for these adversarial organizations to stop their activities in response to medications, giving the illusion that the medications are working, when in reality the adversaries "scale back" their activities in response to the medications. This could be because part of their goal is to get people addicted to dangerous drugs.

  4. Publication bias. Companies only publish favorable research, and discard any unfavorable results.
