Newer angler looking for more info on BFS
So I got one of these Pflueger Monarch combos from Scheel’s for like $80. I got a medium heavy 7.5’ pole with 10lb braid and it’s hard to enjoy. I mostly fish bank fish small urban (featureless) ponds. To cast with it at all I’m fairly large plastics on 1/4 or 3/8 weights, or decently hefty spinners, rooster tails, and occasionally bait fish. I’m not going to bother with talking about bird nests as that is just a skill issue I’m working on. I’ve never gotten a bite. I think it’s just overkill for the bodies of water I fish. I know people pull decent bass out of these ponds, they are in there, I just think I’m trying to hunt deer with a howitzer.
Separately on my spinning rods I catch pan fish for days, but that’s easy enough. I haven’t found a bass, but I’m not really aiming for them with that set up. It’s most always a panfish set up with a small hook for worms and corn. So it’s not weird to me I haven’t gotten a bass there. I don’t think baitcastser=bad and that’s why I am here. It seems like BFS has much lighter rods, tackle, and reels. However when I look around I’m seeing $300 reels on $200 rods with $7 baits and I’m really hoping I’m not just too poor for this style of fishing.
Any budget friendly beginner set ups out there? I don’t really understand how baitcaster+lightweight works, either? My bait caster if I put anything with a total weight of less than 1oz it’s basically impossible for me to successfully cast it any distance at all.
Any advice would help, thanks!
