Newer angler looking for more info on BFS

So I got one of these Pflueger Monarch combos from Scheel’s for like $80. I got a medium heavy 7.5’ pole with 10lb braid and it’s hard to enjoy. I mostly fish bank fish small urban (featureless) ponds. To cast with it at all I’m fairly large plastics on 1/4 or 3/8 weights, or decently hefty spinners, rooster tails, and occasionally bait fish. I’m not going to bother with talking about bird nests as that is just a skill issue I’m working on. I’ve never gotten a bite. I think it’s just overkill for the bodies of water I fish. I know people pull decent bass out of these ponds, they are in there, I just think I’m trying to hunt deer with a howitzer.

Separately on my spinning rods I catch pan fish for days, but that’s easy enough. I haven’t found a bass, but I’m not really aiming for them with that set up. It’s most always a panfish set up with a small hook for worms and corn. So it’s not weird to me I haven’t gotten a bass there. I don’t think baitcastser=bad and that’s why I am here. It seems like BFS has much lighter rods, tackle, and reels. However when I look around I’m seeing $300 reels on $200 rods with $7 baits and I’m really hoping I’m not just too poor for this style of fishing.

Any budget friendly beginner set ups out there? I don’t really understand how baitcaster+lightweight works, either? My bait caster if I put anything with a total weight of less than 1oz it’s basically impossible for me to successfully cast it any distance at all.

Any advice would help, thanks!

Little lunch break quicky

It’s not much, but I didn’t skunk.

Started with a shallow diving Rapala but got nothing. Switched the rooster tail and the bite was on.
I got two big bites from bass but I didn’t have a net and both flopped off when I tried to land them. At least I was able to manage this little fella.

I have genuinely no hope of voting saving us.

I think it’s a complete fantasy to imagine the feckless and incompetent Democratic Party will actually pursue anything of impact against anyone. The ICE agents who shot those people will never see a jail cell. Trump will never see a jail cell. His enablers and cronies will probably not even lose much power or wealth from all of this. The Republican Party will not be seriously damaged by this. Gerrymandering, federal judges, and the Supreme Court will still be conservative zones of control. Citizens United isn’t going anywhere. Single payer healthcare isn’t on the docket. None of it.

Very very very shortly here, the U.S. is going to have to raise taxes and cut spending massively just to pay its own interest payments on its debts. All of Trump’s useless failure will make that situation worse and worse and then a sensible liberal will come in to power, declare austerity measures are needed, lobbying won’t go away, and ultimately how shit everything goes under debt austerity will be blamed on the liberals the the conservatives will once again claim the title of “financially responsible” and regain power.

I don’t see a path forward where we get a Second New Deal and the Working Class Democratic Party grows some teeth and actually does the work it would need to do. AND even with all of that, taxes and austerity are STILL on the horizon.

I love to see people like Zohran and I know Hasan on the trail for other progressives, but it feels like we are trying to pour packets of sugar into a bucket of seawater to try and make it more palatable.

A recent post of a gentleman who downsized his rod collection to 3 raised this question: if you could only have 3 rod/reel combos what would you pick and what are they for?

For me:
#3 - 3’ Ugly Stick Dock Master with a simple spinning reel and 4lb mono - tiny $25 car rod to fish whenever or catch bait fish.
#2 - 7’ Pflueger Monarch medium-heavy casting combo with 10lb braid for big lures and meat chunks for bass and catfish.
#1 - 6’ Bass Pro Megacast Spinning Combo medium light rod with 6’ mono for trout, bass, small spinners, and bobber fishing.

What about you?

My wife has a spinning rod she got from her grandpa. We bought the MegaCast cause it was cheap and recommended and we love it. I have a Pflueger Monarch Baitcaster combo, but I’m having some frustrations with it and I’m getting very jealous of my wife’s rod so now I want my own.

She also has a cheap Walmart Eagle Claw collapsing combo that she loves to use for simple spinners and spoons so she can keep it ready to go. I like to get in little hour fishing sessions after work so a ready to fish set up that isn’t 7 feet long sounds nice, so I was looking to do the same thing. I can’t really find a higher quality collapsing pole. They are all kind of chincey. I am worried i’m spending an extra $15 to have a worse version of just getting the full sized MegaCast set up if I just deal with a 6’ pole.

Anyone have experience with the extendable pole and if it’s worth the money?
