What popular fragrance do you think smells terrible?

I’m not talking about those that you just can’t understand the hype, but are still generally pleasant scents. I’m talking about those that actually smell bad to your nose.

My two are Silver Mountain Water and 40 Knots. The former smells so inky and metallic to me. I have no idea how it is supposed to evoke the Alps. The latter smells like baby wipes. For whatever reason, any marine character is lost upon me.

Rookie with Questions

I’m relatively new to the game and I have only gotten interested in fragrances about a month ago. I have Varvatos Artisan and Virgin Island Water (my legacy bottles) and since learning more and sampling over the last month I have picked up Terre D’Hermes EDT, Ombre Leather, Wood Sage and Sea Salt, and Althaïr. I have a metric shitton of samples (Naxos, Reflection, Aventus, Imagination, Viking, Ani, Tam Dao, Oud Wood, Phylosykos, Cherry Smoke and many others.)

My questions for more seasoned scent heads are:

  1. What do you think are the big scent families I am missing that need near term coverage? I was thinking something Iris based could be a good add to cover more formal events like Dior Homme Parfum. I am sure there are other avenues to go down when the weather cools off again.

  2. Is layering as controversial as it seems on the internet? I have gotten a lot of compliments on Terre with Ombre (I am calling the mix Indiana Jones). I know both are complete scents but I like them together for whatever reason. I also like to add Wood Sage and Sea Salt to VIW to make it smell more like “beach at the resort” than “pool at the resort.”

Thanks all
