A random BF’s notes on Emma (part 2)

Notes on Emma (part 1)

Hey everyone! I’m glad you all liked hearing my thoughts on the first half-ish of Emma! The next one will be Sense and Sensibility although it will be a while as I’m still reading through it.

In the meantime here’s the rest of my Emma notes!

[pic wouldn’t load, imagine an entire page of miss Bates yapping her head off]
•bf: ^^^ YOURE TELLING ME THIS ENTIRE PAGE IS JUST A LEGENDARY YAP SESH FROM MISS BATES WHAT ON EARTH! Great example of show not tell (by telling?) from Austen lol
•bf: ITS EVEN WORSE A FEW PAGES LATER, SHES YAPPING FOR A FULL PAGE AND A HALF WITHOUT JNTERUPPTION AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
•bf: Mrs Elton is kinda snooty
•gf: oh my god Mrs Elton is a straight up bitch tho bc she’s like the worst parts of Emma PLUS absolutely no class (bragging about her rich friends when she isn’t rich herself)
•bf: Hahahahaha Emma’s rant about Mrs Elton is so funny
•bf: Good, good that Mr knightley doesn’t want to marry Jane Fairfax
•gf: Miss Bates is the REALEST character in this whole book lololol. There’s family ([name of certain family member]) that can do a half page of talking easily ahhahah
•gf: Fun fact: I looked up Emma’s fortune. She inherits 30k pounds. that’s….thats as rich as Darcy if not close to double his wealth. And that’s just STORED money, she’s easily getting passive income just from being rich at a bingley or bennet salary (1.2k to 1.5k pounds) from the estate alone, shared between her and her father. Also because the estate is not entailed as it is with the bennets, she could inherit a really nice house too!
aka she could be the biggest trust fund/nepo baby in her entire region LMAO
•gf: also I think this book, Emma, as opposed to P&P, was started and finished when she was an author so she may have intended her book to take place in 1810ish as opposed to maybe 1797ish (P&P) so taking account for inflation, 30k may sound like a lot but it still may be around Darcy levels-ish
•gf: also also also Knightley is just as rich as the Woodhouses but I was just reading that because he’s always out and about, he’s just investing his money differently (and smarter! He’s investing it in dividing up and selling his land to be farmed, making improvements to the estate, etc instead of just wasting it away like others do)
•bf: I’m seeing what you mean about Mrs Elton, she’s starting to bother me with how much she brings up her brother in law
•bf: And stupid maple grove. It’s wild how she can fit it into any topic. Hey [gf’s name] you live at a house right? Did you know we have a house at maple grove? it’s the most wonderful house. As a matter of fact my brother Mr suckling *also* has a house. I do so love Mr suckling, he simply *must* come by in his barouche-landau. Ugh
•bf: “Mr Elton you should dance” “yes Mrs Weston, I’m not an old married man yet and so I would like to dance, shall we?” “Oh nah not me, you should dance with Harriet bc she has no dance partner!” “Oh nope can’t sorry I’m an old married man” LMAOOOOOOOOO
•gf: It’s honestly so funny
•bf: Oh nah, one heroic rescue and now Emma is back to matchmaking. Frank and Harriet are an interesting pairing tho, I don’t know if it would work out
•bf: ^also about this, I could be wrong but my general assumption is that Frank’s social standing is around Mr Elton’s, maybe a bit higher or lower. If everyone was objecting to Harriet and Mr Elton idk why Frank would be any different
•gf: True. I think Frank is at least two steps higher than Mr Elton. Not a Mr Knightley tho
•bf: Oh? Frank remembers something that he says Mrs Weston wrote to him about despite her not knowing anything about it? He heard it in a letter from Jane methinks
•bf: If this were modern times and I were there I would suspect those two are hooking up but seeing as they’re in the early 1800’s I don’t think that’s it
•bf: THEYRE PLAYING WITH WORDS AND FRANK HANDED JANE THE WORD BLUNDER?!?!?? THEY *HAVE* TO BE HOOKING UP
•gf: ABSOLUTELY DARN RIGHT (I’m glad u picked it up so fast)…not anything too spicy bc it’s regency England but yeah, hooking up is a good relative turn
•bf: WAIT AND FRANK WAS THE ONE WHO SUGGESTED PLAYING WITH THE WORDS
•gf: Frank is such a bad good character (or good bad character) bc he is being way too obvious about it and not respecting Jane’s wishes. And he’s very much a profligate guy anyway
•bf: Now at knightley’s place, very suspicious that Frank shows up shortly after Jane leaves…
•bf: SWISSERLAND
•gf: Toblerones from *swisserland*
•bf: “Emma and Harriet belonged to Frank Churchill” same stuff different day lol, I wonder if Emma will try her hand at matchmaking once again
•bf: The vibes are very off and weird at box hill
•gf: oh absolutely, it’s very similar to the ball at nether field from P&P- SUPREME cringe-inducement-embarrassment for the main character
•bf: I am speculating that whatever history Frank and Jane have, it has to be related to the whole Dixon saving her thing on that one boat trip. I’m thinking there’s more to that that Jane Austen is withholding from the readers for now
•gf: yes but not exactly from the boat trip. I forgot exactly what the history was tho
•bf: I’m glad Emma got humbled and had time by herself to reflect on what she said to miss bates, I better see a DAMN good apology the next time they interact
[editors note: you can’t tell from this alone but I was PISSED at Emma, so much so that I put the book down for a few days because I was so upset]
•bf: I’m not seeing an apology… just a visit…
•gf: but the visit is the apology and Miss Bates is so unbelievably nice as to understand the gesture
•bf: FRANK AND JANE ARE ENGAGED WTFFFF THATS CRAZY
•gf: what a surprize!
•bf: …wait what? Emma likes Mr knightley? That feels out of nowhere
•gf: Maybe, but it’s using the friends-to-lovers trope. Emma’s not dissimilar to [describes me, we were very much friends-to-lovers] 😉
•bf: Yeah wait what so the older sister married the younger brother but now the younger sister wants to marry the older brother???
•gf: I suppose so, not that many options around Highbury
•bf: he likes her back??? Sounds like he was about to confess when Emma said “no please don’t say something you’ll regret”
•bf: HE DOES LIKE HER BACK
•bf: I’m curious to see how Harriet takes this, it seems like she’s the one getting screwed the most by everything
•bf: FRANK CONFESSION TIME LETS GO LETS SEE WHAT SECRETS BRO’S BEEN KEEPING
•bf: HE SENT THE PIANOFORTE??? DAMN
•bf: Yet another banger letter-that’s-actually-the-whole-chapter. I wonder if that’s a thing in every Jane Austen book
•bf: Hmm yeah where are they gonna live? I guess knightley would have to move to hartfield huh
•bf: Aww now she’s asking him what he should be called, I wonder if he’ll say darling dearest. Mr knightley the type of guy to want to be called darling dearest [inside bit about what i call her when I'm afraid she's gonna mess with me lol]
•gf: yeah :) for all of its 16 year age gap weirdness, I like this romance quite well because it’s a mature, communicative romance!
•bf: Oh cool Harriet ends up marrying Mr Martin after all. Good for her!
•gf: he really saved her ass because if he hadn’t come thru she’d be cooked financially/socially
•bf: Finished Emma! Good book, I definitely liked it better than P&P although I still have a few questions. So what exactly was franks deal? Was it ever explained what happened between him and Jane that caused them to get engaged but keep it under wraps? And why was he so mean to her in public? I get why he was kinda pursuing Emma so as to keep up appearances but I don’t see a reason to bully Jane. Also it’s still weird that he had to suddenly leave town for a day for that haircut, I thought there was some sneaky nefarious thing he was doing, was it literally just to go get a haircut?

A random BF’s thoughts on Emma (part 1)

Notes on Emma (part 2)

Hello everyone! My GF is obsessed with Jane Austen so I’m reading through all of her books. To not flood our text messages with discussions about the books, I’ve created a separate note on the notes app for each one. I thought you all might like to see my thoughts and her reactions to Emma! (Disclaimer: I’ve read P&P first and didn’t make a notes group :((( but I’m now working through sense and sensibility and will post my notes on it when I’m done)

Here we go!

•bf: the dad’s health is so bad he can’t walk half a mile and back?? Wow
•gf: it’s not that bad….hes kinda old ig but he’s gaslit himself so much he’s a hypochondriac lololol
•bf: WESTONS WIFE DIED AFTER 3 YEARS OF MARRIAGE??? ETERNITY 2???? WE RUNNING IT BACK??? (Tho the choice will be easier I assume lol)
•bf: Damn bro was single for 18-20 years, crazy
•bf: Actually I kinda like this guy, good on him for being happy by himself for so long and saving up to buy the house he wanted and was able to marry someone he liked even if she didn’t have a lot to offer materially
•bf: Woah wait yeah if that much time passed then frank would be about 21ish
•bf: This town seems like a much more rural place than P&P since everyone talks to everyone. Plus, the townspeople actually *like* the woodhouses as opposed to the bennets lol
•bf: So far everyone in this book is cool and awesome and stuff :D
•bf: Emma and Harriet give me the vibes of a senior adopting a freshman lol
•gf: ON THE MONEY
•bf: Emma reminds me a lot of Lucy from Charlie Brown tbh
•gf: OOOH good point
•bf: Austen does a good job at making Emma unlikable lol, why’s Emma gotta be so mean to Mr Martin and his simple farm life? I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt but she’s not making it easy. Like it seems as though Harriet would love to marry Mr Martin but since he’s not good enough for Emma I can see that match not working out sadly. Poor Mr Martin :(
•bf: Hmm wait does Mr Elton like Emma? That would be a cool plot twist. Emma thinks he’s praising Harriet but it reads to me more as “woah Emma you did such a great job at teaching her manners you’re so good. Yes please take her likeness!” As if he’s appealing to Emma rather than Harriet
•gf: 😅😐👀😳😳😳😳😳😳
•bf: Emma seems a little detached from reality. While Lizzie from P&P was a biased narrator, I think Emma is more an unreliable narrator. Maybe I’m reaching but Emma’s biases seem to affect the narrative MUCH more than Lizzie’s did. I’m at the part where Mr Martin sent his neatly-written marriage proposal and Emma is shooting it down and dismissing it but I think Mr Martin is more of a gentleman than Emma gives him credit for and that this reality check is supported by the chapter where it’s just knightley and Mrs Weston talking about Emma and Harriet’s friendship
•bf: Also maybe it’s bc of the newness but honestly right now I’m kinda liking Emma more than P&P, I definitely feel more engaged reading it
OH NO KNIGHTLEY IS GLAZING MR MARTIN I FEEL SO BAD FOR HIM NOOOOOOOOOO
•gf: Glazing?? bf: Glazing is modern slang for really hyping somebody up, like saying they’re the bestest person ever
•bf: If I’m knightley and I’m hearing Emma say “welllll… I didn’t tell her to turn him down but *if* I did it wouldn’t be so bad now would it?” I WOULD BE SO PISSED OFF AT HER. Yeah Jane Austen does a great job at making Emma unlikeable
•bf: If I were to make a modern remake of Emma (I’m thinking similarly to 10 things I hate about you), I’d make Emma an unsuccessful theater student who’s a senior about to graduate and Harriet a somewhat talented freshman. Idk how knightley and Mrs Weston would be portrayed tho, maybe as a part of the friend group that graduated and now attends the nearby college
•gf: oh man ur gonna see clueless and this is all gonna come together
•bf: At the puzzle writing section, I think Elton had a Freudian slip when he said “not even Emma (oh crap and Harriet) could inspire me”. He likes Emma methinks
•gf: *nods*
•bf: Elton has now realized his charade was just another one in the book lol, honestly after reading that section I think he and Emma would be a good match (look at me, just like the main girl herself) and while Emma is kinda tone-deaf when it comes to her matchmaking, she’s not awful and just needs to grow a little bit. She’s definitely smart (not as much as Lizzie but still) and I have hope that she can turn out well but we’ll see what happens
•bf: I’m noticing a trend with Jane Austen writing about women also named Jane who are the most elegant and kind women in their respective books ;)
•bf: WAIT CONNECTIONS WE HAVE CONNECTIONS!!! WHAT A SURPRIZE (for context I read an older version of P&P that had words like chuse, surprize, and connexions and I thought it was funny to read those)
•bf: Currently at the part where Isabella and fam comes to visit, rn I’m liking Emma (the novel) a lot more than I thought I would and definitely more than P&P. Weirdly enough, I think P&P is hailed as this great romantic epic and while that’s true, I don’t think I enjoyed it as much because of its unrelatable, larger than life feeling. P&P feels like a myth while Emma feels more like a comfy story yk? I really like the calm atmosphere in Emma, everything feels more chill and peaceful when compared to the hustle and bustle of P&P. At the moment I’d say Emma is a 4.5/5 for me (I’m liking it more than I liked mistborn for reference)
•gf: WOAH I’ve never thought of it that way honestly but I get it! P&P was never meant to be a romantic epic tho, im sorry I accidentally built it up that way…
imo another way (to rephrase what ur saying) is Pride and Prejudice is sitting down with your family to watch a really good family movie, but Emma vibes is very specifically sitting down with your girlfriends and having a tastefully drunk gossip sesh/yap sesh/bitch sesh about your one friend that you love but still going “GIIIIIIIRLLLLLL WHATTT” at the absent friends story every five minutes with cozy mood lighting and a charcuterie board in another friends apartment
•bf: ^yeah kinda, idk it feels more like P&P is a really good story meanwhile I KNOW Emma and the neighbors and stuff, I’ve met plenty of Emma’s in high school and generally a lot of my neighbors and family friends are similar to Emma’s neighbors and friends
•gf: damn 😅
•bf: Oop Mr Elton and Emma have to share a carriage 👉👈
•bf: Well that’s not how I thought it would go but I should’ve guessed tbh
•bf: Woah woah woah woah woah why is Emma now saying that Mr Elton is proud, conceited, etc??? I understand she’s mad that her plans were ruined by him liking her instead of Harriet but the crash out does not need to be this intense. It is funny how she goes “SHIT Mr knightley was right, he did know Mr Elton better than me. God dammit”
•bf: MAN is Emma presumptuous, that’s crazy that’s she’s now going “how dare Mr Elton say he like me? He’s not nearly as smart as me, I bet he just wants me for my money. I don’t feel sorry for him at all, it’s outrageous that he says I’ve been ENCOURAGING him” like bro what. This further cements my theory that there’s a bit of a disconnect between what Emma imagines and what reality is. It seems almost like Emma doesn’t even think of herself as a person and views herself as a narrator in others’ lives
•gf: 🙌 yes
•gf: she thinks Elton is aiming above his station bc she’s upper class and he’s middle class. Aiming above his station is conceited. Doesnt make it right lol

•bf: I’m laughing at the irony between her being mad at Elton meanwhile she’s doing THE EXACT SAME THING with Harriet
•bf: GOOD SHES LEARNING NOT TO MEDDLE LETS GOOOOOOO
•bf: NOOO WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU SHOULDVE STOPPED MEDDLING AFTER REJECTING MR MARTIN??? HARRIET SHOULDVE ACCEPTED
•bf: I love reading about Jane Fairfax and her upbringing and Emma going “idrk why I dislike her, I just do. It’s definitely (well maybe) not because she follows through on stuff nah that can’t be it” and when being questioned about frank jane just says what everyone says and Austen just ends the chapter with ‘Emma could not forgive her’ LMAOOOOO
•bf: Yk what good on Elton for finding a wife outside of highbury, dude deserves better and I’m glad he’s happy
•gf: oh boy, are you in for a surprise…
•bf: When compared to P&P families how rich are the woodhouses? They’re said to be rich but is it like bingley level rich or a bit above Bennet level rich?
I’m kinda suspicious of frank, idk he doesn’t seem like the guy he’s hyped up to be. It’s especially weird that he’s dodging questions about Jane. I think Emma’s pride would prevent this but if I were her I’d go ask Jane about him more, seems like they got history
•gf: I CAN NEITHER CONFIRM NOR DENY.
•bf: I’m getting more suspicious, wdym you NEED to get your hair cut in London and go 16 miles each way all of a sudden? I think he’s got some hidden secret that he doesn’t want others to know and Jane knows but is too reserved to tell anyone
•gf: ON THE MONEY
•bf: HA Emma’s classism is kinda working against her, now everyone gets invited to the Coles’ place except her and all bc she was planning on turning them down anyways. Womp womp
•bf: Oop never mind lol, gave her a good scare tho
•bf: Mr knightley and Jane??? Married??? How old is he? He’s gotta be like 35 at least if not older, that’s such a huge age gap that even the book mentions it being weird. I do agree with Mrs Weston’s theory tho, I think it makes sense and that Emma is on her usual denial tirade again
•gf: yep
•bf: Yk how people read Mr Darcy as maybe being autistic? I think Emma is maybe aro/ace
•gf: hmmmm yeah I could see that. Combo of being ridiculously rich and having such a particularly unique father that WANTS her around

There’s more but I didn’t want to dump everything in one post. Part two will be up soon!

Edit: Part 2 up now!
