First cosmetic upgrade

Got some weather techs in black, wanting to compliment the black accents throughout the interior and exterior since there’s so much tan already inside. Not sure how I feel about it. Definitely don’t hate it, but second guessing. Thoughts? Also got some matte black WT rain guards.

Update on big turbo install

Just got everything together and started it for the first time in 5 months. Started on the second revolution without glow assist. Was a little skeptical on how this turbo would behave on a diesel but after the first drive on low boost it runs great. Just have some driving and tunning to do now. Only the downpipe is connected so it sounds a little funky but the turbo sounds 🤌. Hits 10 psi by 2300 rpm. It should do 12 psi by 2200 with the fuel turned up a little more. Egts went down 200f at wot and drop much quicker off throttle.

new tires

i need 2 new tires in the front only.

but help me understand this : why is the falken more available and cheaper than the michelin's?

it's cheaper to buy 4 new falkens than 2 michelins.

ive been running these defender ltx for the past 4 years because i like to drive far alot.

i only drive on the highway, pavement, and a little bit of gravel/ dirt roads to sleep and camp in the back roads of where ever i go.

the most off road i have ever done is the sedona devil trail road and i went in with the defenders full psi. i probably got lucky i didnt pop a tire. i made it in and out no issues.

we'll i need help choosing new tires for my truck.

should i stick with highway tires or finally make a switch to all terrain tires? 😮‍💨

my truck is all oem stock.

End of Summer/Labor Day Toyota OEM parts sale going on NOW!

Wanted to share what I found online : 25% off plus whatever dealer discounts , and free shipping on most items over $75 through August 26th. The Southeast Toyota region has jumped the gun on the typical Labor Day sales. I typically wait for the July, September, and December sales for those big orders. Search carefully at all the dealers because each has a discount for typical sales that I have found range from 28-31% (or possibly better)! They are not going to ship bumpers for free, but you can pick them up for the cost of mileage. An example: 43512-0C011 Rotor for the TMU with discount is $63.38 with a 31% dealer discount. Cheers!

Ball joints and steering knuckles

Hi all, going through the list of things I need to replace for the “new” ‘00 limited. Definitely ordering some oem lbjs, ubjs, link assemblys, but what do we think about these steering knuckles? They’re fairly rusted, should I just go ahead and replace them? Unfortunately they’re $525 each, but willing to bite the bullet if they’re a hazard. When I drive and go over any sort of small bump, there’s an unpleasant knocking sound in the front. Would you drive it around till parts get replaced?

Suggestions? Advice?

I’m new to this— my first. I have my 2001 3rd gen 4runner this weekend I am getting my 2” lift put in, upper and lower ball joints, some Toyos open country, and alignment right after. Anything else I should do to it while it’s in the shop?

We have done internal stuff to it. last year we replaced the
• engine
• o2 sensors
• sparks
• knock sensors
• engine coolant thermostats
• heater valves
• some gaskets

Just got my first Toyota (3G4R)

Coming from several Fords (F-150's, Raptors, Shelbys, Terminators), a friend sold me his used, but well maintained 2002 2WD 4Runner for $5k. No rust.. all new timing belt, tensioner, seals, water pump, all belts and hoses, radiator, fresh brakes, trans service. 5 new Falkens, front lower ball joints, steering rack bushings, shifter bushings, led lightning, cold ac, heat, golbi roof rack, retractable awning, tow pkg.

It's like a life-sized Hot Wheels "Tonka Truck".. such a blast to drive. Just wanted to check in and say hi 👋🏽

Pricing Advice

1996 SR5

3.4L V6 RWD

135,000 miles.

Bought the car in 2022.

The first owner took great care of it. Kept it in a garage, drove it regularly but only put 120,000 miles on it. The second owner (me) beat the shit out of it. Messy toddler, hauling a 90lb kayak out the back window, kept outside in the Pacific Northwest and overall this is the car that I used to start learning how to do my own work. Mostly small fixes and installs (bluetooth stereo unit, fixing roof leaks, oil changes, fixing fluid leaks, etc)

The more serious things that popped up over the years I left to the mechanic.

  • Rear window fixed (Apr 2025) — wiper harness short repaired, rear control module tested good
  • Radiator replaced with fresh coolant (Mar 2024)
  • Front brake job — pads, rotors, caliper service (Mar 2024)
  • Full tune-up (Dec 2023) — 6 spark plugs, plug wires, 3 ignition coils
  • Valve cover gaskets replaced twice (Jul 2023, again Dec 2023 with the tune-up)
  • Upstream O2 sensor replaced (Dec 2023)
  • Alternator replaced (Jul 2023), plus both front brake hoses and 3 ft of vacuum line
  • Tailgate lock and latch rebuilt (Feb 2023)
  • Driver door handle repaired, window rail cleared (Jan 2023)

Still needed:

  • 2022 buyer's inspection recommended: timing belt and water pump, coolant and power steering flush, noted sloppy shifter and oil seepage along the oil pan and trans cooler line.
  • Drivers door handle broken again.
  • Keys to start the car different than keys to unlock the car (and the drivers side door doesn’t work, so it has to be unlocked from the passenger side. I have a key fob install kit that would come with the car, but it isn’t installed.
  • Rear hatch panel is currently off but I have the panel. just not the right clips.

So my question is what can I reasonably expect to sell this car for? I am not trying to make a profit. I bought it for 6k and honestly I probably overpaid. And that was before I beat the car up.

Its a beautiful car when taken care of. and I hate to get rid of it, but its just going to sit if I don't.

Any insight is appreciated, just trying to gauge what’s reasonable.

Also, I’ll let it go for less than whatever the consensus is if it’s to someone here. This subreddit has been a huge resource over the past few years.

Service Costs

I recently acquired a 2002 Limited with ~330k miles. Overall, the truck is in great shape and much of the usually needed maintenance has been done over the past 40k miles but I knew before bidding that the timing belt was very overdue.

Yesterday, it got a full checkup by a highly reputable shop in the DMV area and it came back in great overall health but it clearly needs a valve cover gasket replacement and spark plugs since the block is covered in oil and there is no record of them being replaced.

The pricing, however, is eye watering …
Timing belt kit + crank/cam seals - $2300
Valve Cover Gasket + Engine Degreasing - $1300
Spark Plugs - $530
Total - $4130

I was anticipating closer to $2500.

Are these prices as high as they feel? I’ve wrenched on vehicles plenty over the years (mostly brakes, suspension, intakes, oil changes, etc) - how DIY achievable are these?

What’s my 1998 SR5 2WD worth? 250k miles, SoCal, clean title

What would you realistically list this for in San Diego? 1998 SR5, 3.4 V6, 2WD automatic, 250k, clean title, well maintained, normal age related wear but runs great, newer OEM 4Runner wheels/tires. Located San Diego County. Not trying to sell it here just looking for a realistic private party value

Pricing Advice

Was looking for some pricing advice for my 4Runner, seems like prices are all over the place right now so would like to be pointed in the right direction before listing.

It’s a 2002 SR5 4WD with 256k miles.
I’ve done most of the maintenance ( oil changes, various fluid flushes, radiator replacement, installed external trans cooler, LBJ’s ). The biggest thing is that it is way overdue for its timing belt that was done at 120k and I just want the price to reflect that.

Thanks for taking a look!

How do you keep track of your to-do list?

I'd prefer to use a dedicated app to track my to-do list of future diagnostics, repairs, and upgrades for my rig. I'd even use a well formatted spreadsheet if someone had a template to copy.

I'd like to be able to assign priority, type of repair/upgrade (necessary, QOL, off-road, etc.), prospective cost, parts needed.

What do y'all use to ensure you don't lose track of all those things?

Anyone have any advice on bypassing the rear heater core?

Hello all, I got a ‘97 limited and the rear coolant lines that go to the rear heater core are looking pretty crusty, just in one spot where the AC drips water.

I don’t care about the rear heat I would rather just bypass/ delete it. Did some googling and didn’t see any clean bypasses
