Toy Collecting and Variations on a Theme

My little Pony, Transformers, Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, MUSCLE, He Man, Hot Wheels, Barbie, So many other toy lines from the 80s and late 80s.

These toy lines all feature "variations on a theme" (there's more of course). I think it's safe to say this tactic is from toy companies to save money in toy design by reusing molds and various other manufacturing process to make new versions (new characters) of toys to sell to Gen X. "Gotta collect them all"

HOWEVER, I think psychologically I think there's something in my Gen X brain that just LOVES THIS STUFF. I feel like it's my kryptonite. Any time I see something that's variations on a theme I just gotta have it and get them all - complete set.

Toy companies don't do this any more as far as I can tell. The ones do it are re-issueing retro toys.

If you look at MLP or Transformers today there's like 8 characters they rehash over and over. This makes me think this was a Gen X thing???

So do you think this is unique to Gen X or just exacerbated by toy companies of the time?

Time capsule ‘91

Picked up and put down these Snakes and Joes one day in ‘91 and never returned to them until tonight. They look very familiar and I can remember most of the names, maybe they have faired better than me

Original Simon

I picked up this vintage 1978 Milton Bradley, Made in America Simon. It works amazingly!
I had considered selling it, but now that it is home and I’ve played it a bit, this bad boy is staying right here 😁💚❤️💙💛

ThunderCats Lion-O bootleg - Dasin Model looks really cool

The maker is Dasin Model, who also trade as GT and Great Toys. They have been putting out unlicensed 1/12 figures for years, Saint Seiya, One Punch Man, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, Tom and Jerry, and a Captain Planet that shipped as "Earth Guardian" to dodge the name. Reveals only ever land on Weibo, so they are almost impossible to follow from outside China, and buying one usually means AliExpress or a proxy.

https://thundercats.org/toys/bootleg-overview/ we overhauled this section as soon as this figure was announced

No price, no date, and their own card says the final product may differ from the prototype. Full disclosure, thundercats.org is my site.
