My SFAR saga…

A few years ago, I received this Ruger SFAR 308 as a gift from my father. At the time, I neither had the time nor the place to really sort it out.

Recently, I mounted up a scope and took it to the range… to be immediately disappointed. I’ve never owned a rifle that simply refused to run.

I went back and did a little research to discover that significant break in was required, and that even after, many rifles seemed to suffer from tight chambers and finicky gas systems.

I decided after my research to change… nothing. I simply trudged on through operating failure upon operating failure with all ammo types… expending hundreds of rounds, cleaned it vigorously, and lubricated it excessively.

And then this week… a breakthrough, on two separate occasions. Now it just runs and runs… all ammo types - setting 2 or 3 with no problem whatsoever.

Here’s what I feel like I learned:

I should have saved myself $400.00 of ammunition and spent that money on an upgraded gas block immediately.

This rifle needs to run clean, very clean. It also needs excessive lubrication.

I appreciate the tight tolerances of Ruger production, but all it resulted in was creating a diminishing return on value.

I didn’t buy it… but if I had I would certainly not recommend you do. Spend the extra money on something that runs right from day one.

How did I do?

Hello, so recently I asked for AR-10 lower recommendations and I bought one and want opinions. I am also still looking at others that were recommended, but for now I bought this and plan on pairing with a specific upper unless recommended otherwise. Honesty is appreciated as its my first AR-10 I know its likely on the cheaper side, but if it works it works.

LT-10 MGU accuracy, barrel swap questions

Just scooped this LT10 on a trade, 18” 308 match grade upper. First rounds I’ve put through it (allegedly sub 300 round count before trade) with FGMM 175g center strike OTM. Needless to say, very pleased with these groups for a gas gun.

This leads me into my question, as it seems there’s not a ton of Larue large frame info out, and if you ask marky mark it’s proprietary and you have to use their barrels but, looking for info on barrel swap compatibility if anyone’s done it. I’m not in a huge rush but would like to have a 6.5 creed barrel to swap into the rifle in the future. Have my eyes on criterion and proof. If anyone’s done a swap in one of these with success what barrel and bolt did you use?

Presma Action Rod (I think) head is spinning?

I'm trying to get my PSA AR10 back up and running, and the newest problem is the head of my Presma (I think) action rod is spinning.

It came loose trying to get the old PSA barrel off, and now that I'm trying to install a new Criterion barrel, it spinning at well below 40 ft-lbs.

The black holes just below the head do not have set screws or anything I can tighten in them, just some sort of weird press fitting.

My first thought is to simply drill one or both out, fit an aluminium or steel rod through, and call it a day.

Any thoughts?

Rainier Arms barrel extension came loose??

Hey guys, looking for some advice. I have an aero m5 with a 16" Rainier Arms match 7.62x51 barrel, that I built myself and installed a surefire warcomp on with the correct torque. It was fine like that for years. Recently, I decided to switch out the warcomp for a rearden suppressor mount. As I was removing the flash hider that I had torqued to ~30 ft/lbs, the barrel extension came loose. My understanding is that an extension should be torqued from the factory to ~150ft/lbs and it shouldn't be coming loose under these fairly normal circumstances. Also, it seems as though the gas port is indexed at 12 o clock when roughly hand tight, so retorquing the extension would lead to other issues, including head spacing concerns.

So I have a few questions. Is the barrel toast? Buy a new one, because a gun smith fixing it would be more expensive? Should Rainier Arms cover this under warranty because it was torqued incorrectly from the get go? Any insight would be appreciated.

MRGG-S Finally working with federal GMM center strike after re-working the feed ramps.

I think it can group a little tiny bit better, I was shooting unsupported in the rear . I found this rifle has preferred the federal, but it would occasionally get hung up on the flat tip of their center strike round.

Chrome Barrel?

Happy birthday to America. Seeking advice on a barrel for an M5 receiver set I want to build for more aggressive firing schedules. I have a different precision set up, so I'm thinking less about stainless 20" barrels and more about 14.5-16 inch heavier profile, chrome lined, and/or CHF for longevity

Based on my research, there are not a lot of options outside of proprietary cuts like LMT. I might be willing to get something longer and have it cut down, pending thoughts on gas length and dwell. Any ideas from the hive mind?

To the boys who helped me pick a scope

Here it is! Knight's SR 25 with 16" inch barrel chambered in 6.5 creedmoor. The scope of choice is the Tangent Theta 525 Gen 3 XR mounted on QD Spuhr.

Still waiting on the supressor and cover!

I'll be using an accutac bipod as well!

Thank you for the people who helped! My next build will definitely feature a Leupold but maybe next year and on MRGG or a bolt.

Aero m5 build .308

I posted on this thread about 3 months ago maybe longer. Ever since then I have put so much money into this build I’m done with it. I’m honestly guessing my barrel is out of spec and the gas port needs to be opened up. It’s a 18in .308 m5 upper with a aero lower I have a geissele 2 stage trigger spike tactical internals a H5 buffer tube I’ve tried all the buffer weights a H1 H2 H3. I keep having FTF failure to lock back. I also have to mortar out each round when I chamber a round I tired the plunk test the bullet is seated in the chamber it doesn’t come out with out force . I’m honest fed up with this build. I did contact aero and I’m just waiting for a shipping label to get a brand new upper I’m don’t with this one. Does anyone else here have the same issues.
Edit: yes I clean the fuck out the chamber. Made it worse actually had to send it to a gun smith with a live round stuck in there.

CMT-10 Upper Receiver

Where can I find a CMT upper receiver for my ar10?

I have a complete upper/lower build already. I’m wanting an upper for another build but can seem to find any.

Anyone have a recommendation for an upper that will fit properly with my CMT lower?

Slight hiccup *Update*🤣

So building an AR10 has been a heck of a learning experience but I’ve hit a snag. I recently bought a grip to put on the lower and the grip screw isn’t wanting to barely go in a couple of threads and I don’t wanna strip it, has any of you encountered this if so what you do??

Edit: Figured it out thanks to you all. I ended up taking a tap wrench to it and it helped get it full seated.

Favorite complete AR10 options that don’t look identical to an AR15

This is kind of a silly way to describe it, but if I’m investing in a nice AR10, I don’t want it to be “just another” AR15 in my safe that just happens to be chambered in .308. Hope you guys catch my drift because it makes sense in my head. Examples being sig tread and DD5V3

AR10 Ammo

With the price of 308, am I doing myself a disservice by stocking up on 762? With roughly 50 to 80 cents cheaper per round on average, It has me thinking hard about picking up a few thousand rounds. I have a few hundred right now as is and maybe 500 rds of 308.

I don't hunt and I'm not a comp shooter. I'm strictly range/shooting out back for fun with an 18" barrel through variable 3-9 w/top mount RDS. I understand the range accuracy/pressure difference with the 308 but really is that enough for me to justify the cost? In the event I have to defend myself from a coyote or intruder, I'm not worried about letting 762 fly. And yes - my AR is chambered for 308 & 762.

Barrel Question

Building an AR-10

Picked up a Centurion Arms MK11 16in.

Inspecting the barrel prior to install I noted a dark spot near the threads. Ran a bore snake through multiple times, nothing came out. Same dark spot.

Sent the barrel to centurion arms, they said they found nothing and are shipping it back to me. Great customer service experience.

I’ve built countless rifles in my life, this is the first time I’ve ever seen a barrel like this. Has anyone seen something like this on a brand new barrel before?

I trust the manufacturer, however this just feels strange.
